Police have been deployed at every stop on the Metro Bus route to handle the problems caused by a surfeit of ‘joy riders’ and Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has instructed the Lahore Transport Company (LTC) to propose a suitable fare to end these problems.
After the chaos on Metro buses on Monday, the situation did not greatly improve on Tuesday. Buses packed with people enjoying the free ride still did not stop at several stations and many who had destinations to reach remained stranded for hours. Armed with batons, the police tried to hold back crowds and several brawls broke out in the effort. As many as 40 buses plied the route on Tuesday as five buses were still away for repairs.
Mujahid Force SP Romail Akram said around 800 policemen were deployed on Metro Bus stations. He said the deployment had initially been ordered for a week. SP Akram told The Express Tribune that 15 men at every station will keep troublemakers in check.
He said they will operate in two shifts. He said these officials will not carry firearms as their job was primarily to provide guidance.
However the commuters were not very pleased with these officials. Many were seen quarrelling with officials to let them on the already crowded buses. Several women complained to the police about being harassed on the buses.
A woman at Ichhra station who refused to reveal her name said it was unfair there was no gender segregation on these buses.
She said a group of rowdy youngsters at the back of a packed bus had been rude to her throughout her travel. Commuters stranded on the route said they did not have alternative transport. Many of them requested the government to charge a fare. “Why should we suffer for a political stunt,” one said.
Senator Pervez Rashid, spokesman for the provincial government, told The Express Tribune that Sharif had instructed the LTC to recommend suitable fare to exclude troublemakers.
LTC Chairman Khawaja Ahmad Hasaan said the situation had improved after the first day. He said the free service might just continue for a month. He said teams headed by political leaders were trying to educate people regarding the negative impact of ‘joy rides’ on the bus. He predicted that the phenomenon out in a few days. “People here have seen this type of bus service for the first time … They are only expressing their joy,” he said.
Hasaan said meetings would be held daily to assess the situation. He said they would also discuss the possibility of setting a fare. “Joy riders would be encouraged not to travel during rush hours,” he said.
The busses have not been designed to allow gender segregation, he said. When asked whether Muhammad Ashiq, a 45-year old man who broke his leg when he got stuck in a bus door, would receive compensation, Hasaan said he was not aware of the matter.

"They are only expressing their joy", lolll. I hope they don't express any of this joy on any other public property any time soon. 2.9 billion hospital with leaking ceilings in Rawalpindi and now allowing people to use a multi billion dollar service for free, this is a recipe for disaster, respected CM please don't use public money for joy rides and political gimmicks.
@maaz: our nation knows the trick of turning positive things into negative.....
the money for education should be cut from the expenditure that our politicians lavishly spend on themselves......by buying expensive cars,,,making frequent foreign trips with 100s of cabinet ministers.... we should appreciate the positive step..from whoever it might be.....
@Maaz: I think that the Buses and transportation is a priority because everything needs to improve. I think the main difference is that Punjab government spends on its people whereas other leaders don't spend anything on development. We may say they should not make bus transit system or motorways or hospitals like they are doing but it is better than doing nothing like other places!
This nation needs halal condoms ( mullah approved) to stop population.
@stevenson: I too strongly agree yeah actually they haven't seen this ever so with the passage of time it will get better people will learn Insh'Allah Thumbs up for generous comment!
Gosh...How illiterate my ppl r......Disappointed
Lol ! Joy ride..
Only one word comes to mind seeing Shahbaz's political gimmickery - pathetic!
This is the result of shoddy planning.
I am amazed to see how people keep harping about better education in Pakistan for the masses. Does anyone know how overemployed the entire "national infrastructure" already is? Where would these well educated people go to earn money? How many of them would have the werewithal to do some kind of business or become entrepreneurs.
What this country needs more than education is manners and a "cultured" outlook. It is extremely disheartening to see elder and middle-aged people conducting themselves in the most callous and uncultured manner possible, in public. What do we expect our youngsters to learn from that? The entire nation's level of civility has dropped down, off the radar. Anywhere you go, you find the youth, the middle-aged and the elderly behaving rowdily with those around them. Whether educated or uneducated, whether poor or rich, people in Pakistan seem to have lost it when it comes to mannerisms, the art of good conversation and cultured debate, the ability to live life without offending or harming others.
Alas, in Pakistan, it seems that civility has had a painful and permanent demise.
Whose bright idea was to make it free? That person should be fired! ;)
there should be segregation. strange they didnt think of it earlier!
i hope these buses servive this barbaric torture in 1 month. come on, plz get some money from these free riders. its our tax paid money that's getting wasted.
@ stevenson I do not blame the parents because even they are were not educated. Masses are kept uneducated so these corrupt political family mafias can enjoy power ....You need to educate people and most of your problems will settle down slowly their is no other way..
I feel pity for those who want to see the bus failing in their political bias, Someone said, we need to educate people instead of giving them transport, Well many of these trouble makers are students. We should improve as society rather than preferring to live in 19th century.
@stevenson: As stevenson mention that the parents are to be blamed for not educating their children. i personal though the if this money that was spent on metro was complicatedly spent on education sector that will be more beneficial and long lasting. Government still not thinking that education is more important that infrastructure. Thinking should have to be changed.
@stevenson: I dont think this is about people seeing these buses for the first time, if you treat people with respect you they give respect in return. I smell some thing fishy in all this.
Making available this service for 'free' is a political gimmick and is equivalent to purposely encouraging people to misuse public property.
