Youth should strive to elevate scientific research to new heights. This was stated by Pakistan Science Foundation Chairman Manzoor Hussain Soomro, at a prize distribution ceremony of an essay competition on Monday, said press release.
SDPI Senior Adviser Dr Mahmood Khawaja briefed the participants on the adverse effects of chemicals and recent international efforts to curb the mercury emissions.
The essay-writing competition on “Sources of chemicals like mercury and their impacts on environment and health” was organised by the Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) in collaboration with the Zero Mercury.
The competition aimed at creating awareness among young writers about the implications of mercury emissions on environment and to encourage them to reflect on the hazard of chemicals and their impact on health.
In all, 40 schools with 203 participants from twin cities took part in the competition.
In the senior section, Shireen Faisal from Schola Nova won the first prize, Farhana Irshad and Sirat Nasim from PAEC College Nilore clinched the second and third prizes respectively.
In the junior section, Azka Azhar and Mariam Kiani of EMS School won the first and third prizes respectively, and Ali Rahman from Roots School DHA campus won the second prize.
