Minhajul-Quran International (MQI) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri has claimed that if he had allowed the participants of his January 14 long march a ‘free hand’, the country would have been placed under martial law “within five minutes”.
He told a press conference in Lahore on Sunday that the objective of the long march was to promote peace and convey a message to the world that Pakistanis are peaceful people. At the same time, he said had the government not come forth for negotiations, he would have allowed the marchers a free hand which he claimed would have culminated in martial law.
Qadri maintained the long march was a preliminary step in his mission to rid the country of ‘corrupt looters’. The MQI chief added that he would kick off the second phase of his mission soon and organise long marches ‘in every district of the country’.
PML-N’s reaction
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Senator Pervaiz Rashid termed Qadri’s comments regarding martial law an attempt to save himself from humiliation.
“In order to save himself from humiliation after the failure of the long march, Qadri is levelling allegations against the country’s defence institutions. PML-N strongly condemns these allegations,” said the senator in an official statement. He asked the spokespersons of the defence institutions to take immediate notice of Qadri’s comments.
Rashid accused the MQI chief of using his religious seminary for political purposes and claimed this was a serious violation of the agreement under which he had been provided land free of charge for religious education.
He maintained that people were now aware of Qadri’s gimmickry and would not fall for ‘any new drama’.
Qadri relinquishes post as PAT president
At the same press conference on Sunday, Qadri relinquished his position as president of MQI’s political wing, the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT).
He named IT specialist Dr Raheeq Abbasi as his replacement. Abbasi was taken away from his MQI duties before being put into the political spotlight.
Qadri’s party is registered with the election commission, but he said that they would be sending the names of new office-bearers on Monday. Talking about the possibility of the party taking part in the upcoming elections, Qadri said he had been empowered by its leadership to take a decision but that he would announce it at an appropriate time.
According to MQI officials, the party has asked Qadri to conduct visits across the country to gauge public support. Once Qadri returns with feedback they would be in a better position to take a decision on the elections. They told The Express Tribune that Qadri was also holding talks with Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement for contesting the elections in Punjab under an alliance. Any decision on the elections would, however, hinge on the results of these negotiations as well.
This was confirmed during the press conference when Qadri vowed to hold “long marches against corrupt leaders” in every district across the country. He renewed his criticism of the election commission, announcing that he would unearth the “corrupt mafia” inside it soon.
Qadri also rejected the idea of the new Bahawalpur Janoobi Punjab and claimed it was nothing more than a political stunt by the ruling party. He suggested a referendum among the region’s populace before a new province is carved out of it.

@Shameema: Well actually the character of Luqman was exposed on LIVE TV, so if you believe what he is saying than, I sincerely wish you teh best of luck.
Dr TahirulQadri filed the petition against unlawful ELECTION COMMISSION, Hellooooooo whats wrong whats wrong.....wait for coming disasters thru this corrupt ECP people.
Qadri has gone out of his mind.
@ Ahsan demand for free and fair elections and implementation of all clauses related to general elections and criteria given by constitution for contestant of elections. Constitution doesn't tell us only to hold election after every 5 years and 3 months caretaker setup. But it also tell us how elections will be conducted. How it can be made free, just honest, fair and free form all corrupt practices. Implementation of article 62/63 and 218 in it's true form and creating public pressure in peaceful way is a very constitutional and right way. Three petitions, one in Lahore HC and two in Islamabad HC were registered against long march and all were dismissed by the court by declaring it in accordance with constitution.
Change is what we see now after long march that every party who did not supported the long march but now repeating same demands in other words. Change through peaceful way cannot bring any abrupt change but it will gradually bring change to this country. Be rational, what you want can only be achieved by ruthless bloodshed probably.
I would suggest you to go through the profile and work of Dr. Mohammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, it will change your mind. Leaders like him not born every day.
If Martial law which he claims to have avoided ( by disallowing free hand to the participants of long march) is he not responsible for creating a situation which is apprehended to result in military rule.?. Does it not induce to believe his perception that the long march had a nuisance value too which he did not utilise for which the nation should be grateful to him. By declaring to start / arrange similar marches at district level he is testing the water. Good, let him enter the mainstream politics. at least his party is hopefully expected to be better than other religious parties.
No matter whoever tries to bring a democratic govt in pak..it would never be stable..as pakistan needs to be educated on science and modern educational system to learn growth and development instead of learning from religious institutions....
@ Naveed Feroz Ali
Can you please explain what is constitutional in eyes of TQ:
Asking for change while he has nothing to say in support of this (Change) Asking to Shaheed PPP Govt just before two-three months and giving them a slogan for their electionAre you sure he didnt want to be a caretaker PM. We should have named him (Martial Law Man) after all his actions thnx to Govt atleast they gave him respectable exit.
All I see is a character assassination of Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri. False accusations and propaganda which is straight forwardly refused by Him many times. Nobody dares to challenge him or his demands on legal basis because what he says is just to implement constitution of Pakistan and rule of law. one thing is very clear that beneficiaries of this corrupt system will never support him and always keep maligning his character. But people who have ability to think over all propaganda have realized that he is not doing all this for his own or his organization benefit. It's for benefit of whole country and nation. I wish all patriotic parties like IK, Dr. A.Q Khan and from any other group should join hands with him. He is surely representing a national agenda and if these people don't give him support they would be equally accountable and responsible for much grieved situation of our country after 5 years. Lets strive to achieve a goal of free and fair electoral system..free from all corrupt practices.
Please never take his words seriously because three things are free and most easiest 1-Huge verbal claims, 2-Stargazing and daydreaming and 3-Living in the fool's paradise And Tahir-ul-Qadri is facing the same three things mentioned above......
Although Dr. Qadri's demands were confusing, they are now slowly elucidating to a clearer picture of the changing scenario in Pakistan.
He only wants the people’s representatives to have a clean and incorruptible character, conduct clean politics and work with honesty. This is achievable by re-designating persons to the ECP and scrutinizing their life history with a desire, they come clean. (Articles 61, 62, 63).
Dr. Qadri being a religious and politically learned, articulate speaker has the support of many people. Unfortunately, this is remains veiled but hopes his party representatives and Imran Khan are given a chance to come forward in combination with members of other political parties who are educated and relatively clean.
Let us pray that a caretaker government, minus PPP, PMLN, PMLQ and nationalist and religious parties, is formed with educated and sedate persons conducive to our environment. Salams
"Qadri has claimed that if he had allowed the participants of his January 14 long march a ‘free hand’ That is the extent of respect he has for the participants, as if they were dummies and his slaves and did not have their own mind. Even if he is right about martial law, then why he did not realize that before he started agitation politics? If he is such a democrat why he was so happy at the false news of the arrest orders of elected PM? Why is he not going back to Canada to defend his legal position and reputation?
@Shameema:
Exactly, just like Mr. Lucman's interview with Malik Riaz, where he showed how innocent Malik sahib is and now he is defending Mr. TuQ
I dont get his requirement of desolving the Election commision this will only help the corrupt political parties?
Yea whatever. A mere pretext to retain his Canadian citizenship and not get deported.
Only an Army implant would know and talk about the looming Martial Law and a great majority of us Pakistanis are well aware of who Dr. Qadri is and whose interests he is serving both within the country and outside.
His name is synonymous with three words "delusional" "lunatic" and "hypocrite"
The media has been repeating lies like a parrot against him! They said he was living on social security and had got his Canadian passport on the basis of political aysylum, that he had been summoned by the canadian Authorities, blah, blah, blah. ALL THIS WAS SHOWN TO BE FALSE by Mubashar Lucman. The ET and other newspapers should apologise for running false stories without checkimg their facts.
He is a master of twisting facts and his body language tells the truth. He may fool some people who have no knowldge of religion but he can not fool public about politics. He is exposing himself and intresting thing is he doesn't care.Prestige has nothing to do with mullah.
LMAO!!!!
This is a very serious matter, therefore government must take action against "Qadri, the Anarchist." His statement is a slap on the face of Parliament and grave insult to our patriotic armed forces.
is this guy mentally alright? i mean seriously, he should be checked out because he seems mentally stable. no one would tell the lies he does constantly and then change them at the drop of a hat!
what this man wants actually? confusing
