Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif inspected parts of the Metro Bus Service project, without security and protocol, for three hours during the rain on Sunday, according to a press release from the Directorate General of Public Relations (DGPR).
The chief minister began his visit at Shahdara and stopped at every bus station all the way to Ittefaq Hospital and reviewed the work, accompanied by LDA Director General Ahad Cheema and others. He also inspected the under-construction Kalma Chowk underpasses.
The MBS, which will operate on a 27-kilometre bus corridor from Gajju Mata to Shahdara – including an 8-km elevated expressway on February 10.
Talking to people at various sites, the chief minister said that the infrastructure built for the MBS was “a masterpiece of architecture” and the project “a unique example of transparency, [high] standards and speed”, according to the DGPR press release.
Sharif said that the project, which he repeatedly described as “the biggest in the country’s history”, would rid Lahore of its traffic problems. It was also a unique project in Pakistan as it addressed the needs of the poor, he added.
The Punjab government executed the project at a cost of Rs30 billion, he said, while the federal government – or President Asif “Zardari and his cronies”, as he referred to it – would not have been able to build it for Rs200 billion, “as their only interest is corruption”, he said.
“They have only looted national resources and filled their pockets during the last five years while the provincial government has undertaken record development activities,” he said.
The chief minister gave certificates to engineers and cash prizes to labourers who have worked on the project. He also asked several people what they thought the fare should be.
Talking to media at the wedding of a television reporter in Township, the chief minister said that he would personally travel by bus on the MBS, as would ministers and assembly members, alongside office employees, labourers and other citizens. The MBS would be comfortable, economical and safe, he said. Many countries had modern bus systems, but the Lahore MBS project was the best with regard to its high standards, transparency and speed, he claimed.
Citizens’ feedback
During his inspection tour and interaction with citizens, the chief minister received wholly positive feedback, according to DGPR.
“They said that it is difficult to believe that such a big project could be completed so quickly. They said that the Metro Bus was a big achievement for Shahbaz Sharif which would always be remembered. They said that people were very happy about the welfare project. They said that Shahbaz Sharif had won the hearts of the people by completing the Metro Bus project,” said the press release.
“Calling the project a masterpiece of architecture, they said that Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif was a true Khadim-i-Punjab and the Sher Shah Suri of the modern era ... and that everyone was surprised to see the pace of work and quality of the project.”

@Maria: This argument of comparing Punjab with Other Provinces is just like argument of Balour comparing Pakistan's Railway with Afghanistan.
I think, shabaz sharif is the best CM in the all of world. God bless him May he live long, next five year for great man Mr. Shabaz Sharif
i have a solution......make Lahore a separate province and let PML-N play out their dreams....rest of Punjab will immediately vote for this as well...because shareefs are very very good administrators of Lahore but sadly ignore backward areas of province......the remaining Punjab may well be ruled by PTI after elections and we will see the comparison....
Anything BIG is positive. Why so negative indian!
Firstly i don't think so this is a masterpiece of architecture and secondly I saw CM's program with Javed chaudry in which he told that 30k ppl will use these metros buses everyday and 10rs will b charged from every passenger, so simple math tells me that this project will generate a total of 300k revenue everyday. Any businessman will tell u that investing 30 billion Rs and generating 300k a day is a recipe for financial disaster. I have nothing against CM but i think he should start more sustainable projects rather than projects like these.
my last comment didn't make it to et cz it had some words in the favor of young doctors. really when we were told that the media has been bought by the noora league not to give coverage to younge doctors, i brushed that aside as conspiracy theory but then it had to believe that anyway... thats why we have lost our hope on media. and perhapz this would be my last comment on et and from today we wont be watching or reading any of the express media group.
I am not criticing any personality but guys just evaluate the project on its merits and otherwise. This is a 27 km linear project costing over 30 billion. Sorry to say lahore is not just the road and we all know how wide-spread lahore is. I think in this huge sum of money, CM could have purchased thousands of buses and have given one complete lane to them on the existing road network. This would help to discourage people to use private vehicles and come to public transport instead, which would help to change the overall mindset of people towards public transport. This was a great oppurtunity to change the societal perceptions rgarding sustainable development and mutual coexistence and respect by promoting public transport in the whole of the city, which i fear has been missed.
Imran Khan and Shahbaz Shareef have both got the knowhow of initiating and executing mega projects. I wish PML (N) and PTI could join hands for the betterment of our nation. One workable solution could be PML (N) should take this turn and give the next turn to Imran Khan. In these 10 years Pakistan can reach phenominal heights.
What a non sense.... IT COVERS JUST ONE ROUTE IN LAHORE OUT OF TENS OF MANY AND OUT OF THOUSANDS IN PUNJAB...
Ys it is good step... but I don't thing is revolutionary...
CM IS NOT OF PUNJAB... HE IS ADMINISTRATOR OF LAHORE...
@Pakidude:
Your statement perfectly demonstrates whats wrong with our electorate. Devoid of facts, no argument, no nothing. Just blindly following a pied piper down a blind alley. Plus, you know, a face at the end. Because that's what was missing form your oh-so-cogent point.
@Qaisrani: Grow up and get a life!
How many Seriki speaking people live in Lahore . They are in the millions.
And millions come from all over Pakistan to work in Lahore. Keep your logistic hatred aside - it is really unbecoming.
@Maria: Urmmm Punjab is NOT Lahore :) and that precisely is the problem of PML-N and its followers, they are limited to Lahore
Saying that it will reduce traffic makes me think that CM Shabaz Sharif sb. is just trying to score points. Firstly, this is the first of its kind projects and people of Lahore, specially those, who drive cars will hesitate to travel (not used to of it before). 2) Basically, the project has catered the needs of poor people who, before, used to travel on busses or vans. It leaves a question mark that how on Earth will it reduce traffic? Infact, along with this, they should have catered areas where people own cars which would have certainly helped in reducing traffic or should have taken steps that more offices were built on Ferozpur Road 3) The provincial government will need to subsidize this project which will just burden the failing economy.
Kalma Chowk underpass has been in pipeline since Musharaf Era. I don't understand why they delayed it till December maybe to bag some votes? Recently, they constructed the road from Kalma Chowk to Barkat Market and planted so many flowers but soon they decided to build a underpass - Sad Why not they can plan something accordingly? The model town underpass is excellent but it is far to near from Kalma Chowk Flyover which can result in accidents as cars will be entering Ferozpur Road from Main Boulevard as well. People of my country have so feeble memories that they will forget the issues/atrocites in the first four years and will appreciate such projects in the last year. I would suffice by saying that although these projects are excellent but no prior planning was done and will result in massive damage. Plus, for such projects no proper tendering procedures were followed and I am pretty sure next government will definitely filing cases against this project.
Actually majority of our social media critics use their own vehicles, they don't imagine the problem of us who have to travel through public transport, we know the importance of this Metro bus. So continue criticism but we will continue to appreciate this effort....
Lets all just be happy that a good facility is being provided. it is needed and those who say get more buses, these buses will run on their own roads, not on common traffic roads, thus providing a good speed as well.
I will most likely vote for a decent person, who may not be coming from any party and bag 300 votes in election coz good people should come forward. I have no intention to vote for PML (N) but what is good, should be appreciated.
so lets all stop being cry babies and say well done.
You dont have to b a PTI supporter to acknowledge the Stupidity of this project !!! The same amount of money could have been spent on primary schools, primary care hospitals and job structure for teachers and doctors.Time for us to prioritize our problems.
Guys who criticising they are all just opposing the PML-N good work because they dont want any welfare work in punjab they want situation like karachi in punjab and they want corruption like federal govenment in punjab they want government like raisani in balochistan andcorrupt goverment like kpk
@Mohsin Ditta: yes by that logic people in karachi are also stupid, what did mustafa kamal do eh? buy some concrete and built a few flyovers, its not rocket science. However the fact is opposite, we in Karachi and Lahore are not stupid, we know very well what it would have been to drive around in Karachi without flyovers.
Well atleast he is doing something right . they had the motorway in their previous term and the Mass transit system in this term . something solid , concrete ,something to show . what do they( PPP, ANP , MQM , PML-Q) have to show in KPK , Sindh , Balochistan or even Islamabad . The zero point interchange in islamabad was started by the previous government and thats it .
@S.S. Ahmad: i am a PTI supporter and I always appreciated MBS .. good things must be acknowledged... and positivity should prevail..
Would it kill PTI guys to acknowledge something good and say "Yeah it's a good project. We will try to do better" Distrust of PTI is growing because they are not honest to themselves and the public.
its a good project and surely help masses but its not "a masterpiece of architecture"... what is architectural in in???
Com'on guys !!!! he is not making / updating infrastructure development projects out of his own pocket .... its our taxes ,,, if he is doin so ,,, he is just performing his duties ..... how well can he perform in comparison .... that only time will tell ..... I will still vote for PTI Halaa Captain
Saraikistani must start protests for allocation of their funds to fund projects in Lahore. They should protest for Punjab's bifurcation. Millions of people have been drowned by floods each year but PMLN only cares for Lahore.Time is up for Punjab's division.
A truly exemplary project. Political animosity and myopia are the main reasons for opposition to this project. Once the project gets underway, everybody will be convinced that every metropolis of Pakistan desperately needs one just like it. I wish PMLN comes to power and builds one in Karachi too.
yeah, whatever, i will still vote for PTI :D
Shahbaz made sure to get a windfall for his steel mills by this project, which makes no sense economically or otherwise.
@John the Baptist: Perhaps you have no concept of the importance of infrastructure and mass transit for the public but the people of Lahore are anxiously awaiting the completion of this project. It has done wonders for Bogota upon which this transport model is based. It will prove yet another feather in the hat of Shahbaz Sharif who has done great work in upgrading Punjab. Compare development and stability in Punjab under his watch with any other province. The only people trying to score cheap political points who can't appreciate that Shahbaz Sharif has truly delivered for the people of Punjab. If you are so negative about the state of Punjab cities, I suggest a quick visit to Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi or Sialkot where you should ask locals how efforts by the provincial government are welcomed and applauded.
I think Shabaz Sharif is the only good CM out of five CMs in Pakistan. well done Mr Sharif.
@BAM: He shud also tell us how much of it went into his pocket thru corruption.
I cant seem to understand the logic behind this project....35 billion rupees for a 27km road. this money could have easily got us around 4000 buses..which would in fact solve our public transports problems not this "architectural masterpiece"..CM sb please inform the public the amount of subsidy you are going to give on this project..this is not a self sustaining project and will only bleed our already frail economy. STOP PLAYING ELECTION ELECTION AT OUR EXPENSE!!!
Are ppl stupid he built a road and bought buses how is this rocket science how is this am architectural master piece Problem with Pakistanis is there so gullable
If they vote for PML n or ppp them don't cry when ur children die of hunger or ate uneducated or can't get jobs or get slapped by sharifs children
Masterpiece of architecture? C'mon really?
I.M. Pei must be rolling in his grave at this masterpiece of architecture. Huge waste of public money!
