QUETTA:

Former Balochistan Chief Minister and Federal Minister for Privatisation Jam Mir Mohammad Yusuf passed away after suffering a severe heart attack in Islamabad, late on Saturday.

One of the most prominent personalities in the country, Jam Yusuf, the Jam of Lasbela, served as the Chief Minister of Balochistan under the previous government. He served as minister in both the federal and provincial cabinets as well on several occasions.

The president of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s Balochistan chapter, Yusuf was elected as both a member of the National Assembly and Balochistan Assembly in the last elections. Following an abortive attempt at becoming the province’s chief minister a second time, he surrendered his seat in the provincial assembly.

More recently, Yusuf faced murder charges, along with former president Pervez Musharraf and prime minister Shaukat Aziz, in the assassination of Nawab Akbar Bugti. In particular, Nawab Bugti’s son Jamil Akbar accused him of summoning federal troops for maintaining law and order in Bugti Tribal Territory – a move that led to Nawab Bugti’s killing.

While he had been granted bail by the Balochistan High Court and the trial court, he remained under stress due to the murder trial, according to sources.

Jam Yusuf will be buried in Bela Town. His body will be taken to Bela for the last rites.
