HARIPUR:
The chief warder of Central Prison was suspended on corruption charges and barred from entering the prison premises until further notice, official sources said.
Masoodur Rehman Khan, the jail superintendant, said that the decision was taken after hearing complaints that the chief warder Maqsood Ali was accepting gratification.
Khan said that Ali was accused of selling khadis, a cemented platform that jail inmates use for sleeping, for Rs4,000 to 5,000 each and thus collected thousands from the prisoners.
Khan conducted inquiry on the complaints and after recording statements of over a two dozen inmates endorsing the intelligence report about Ali’s taking gratification, he suspended him from service.
The jail warder, according to superintendent, has been served with show cause notice and he was bound to submit his reply within 14 days and after his reply the jail administration would decide whether he should be removed from service or penalised.
Over 39 jail warders and head warders were removed from service during the last six months on disciplinary grounds including gratification and violation of conduct. The jail houses over 2,000 prisoners.
