ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has asked the government for another election grant worth Rs5 billion, Express News reported on Wednesday.

Law Minister Farooq H Naek informed the Senate in a written reply regarding ECP’s request for additional funds.

Naek explained that around Rs1 billion are requested under the election allowance category, while around Rs210 million are needed for temporary phone connections, Rs870 million for renovation of polling stations, Rs480 million for transporting polling material, Rs450 million for election campaigning and Rs210 for purchasing ballot boxes and voting screens.

ECP in action

The ECP recently slapped a ban on recruitments in government departments except through the federal or provincial public service commissions.

The commission also took strong exception to the reports that funds allocated for many development projects were being diverted to the prime minister’s discretionary fund to be used for electioneering.

A few weeks back, the commission had imposed a ban on all advertisements from the national kitty for electioneering by federal and provincial governments. Constitutionally, the ECP is empowered to take such steps to ensure fair playing field to all parties in the elections.

I nominate Najam Sethi as the care taker prime minister to hold honest and transparent elections in Pakistan.
