Wheat profiteers in Sindh govt’s crosshairs

Chief minister promises stern action, enforcement of govt issued price.

The provincial government decided to provide subsidy of Rs680 million for two months to provide flour at reasonable rates to the low-income bracket of the province.

KARACHI: The Sindh government warned illegal profiteers and hoarders of strict action if they continue selling wheat at artificially inflated prices.

Strict action will be taken against the shopkeepers violating the government’s price directive, said Chief Minister of Sindh Qaim Ali Shah while taking serious notice of increase in prices of flour in the province.

It was decided that the Food Department of Sindh will provide wheat to flour mills at an ex-mill price of Rs33 per kg, and retail price of flour will be Rs34.5 per kg.

The provincial government decided to provide subsidy of Rs680 million for two months to provide flour at reasonable rates to the low-income bracket of the province. Shah said the government, at all levels, will control the price of flour in the province.

Shah directed all deputy commissioners of the province to ensure provision of flour at the subsidised rate of Rs34.5 per kg to the people and for all out efforts and measures be evolved to follow and implement the government’s decision in letter and spirit.

Earlier, the Food Secretary Aftab Memon informed the meeting that the Food Department of Sindh currently held 680,239 tons in total stock.

According to the break-up, Karachi division holds 73,507 tons of stock, Hyderabad 95,977 tons, Sukkur 352,123 tons, Mirpurkhas 78,097 tons and 80,534 tons in Larkana.

Price of a 100 kg bag of flour in the open market ranged from Rs3,100 to 3,150 in December 2012 in the region, whereas the price set by the government was Rs2,800.

anonymous | 11 years ago | Reply Ex Mill price of wheat at Rs.33/KG and flour price at Rs.34.5/KG . As if the millers are working to provide flour at a loss for the sake of government and poor masses. The government has no clue as to how businesses are run.
