JAMRUD: Five people, including an elder of the Kuki Khel tribe, were killed and one person was injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire at a vehicle in Chapri area of Jamrud on Sunday.

Witness Jannat Gul said the incident took place around 8am when a tribal elder Sar Mir along with his son, were going to Jamrud Bazaar. When they reached Shangeerh village, the accused, waiting in hiding, attacked their car and sprayed the vehicle with bullets, killing Sar Mir and his son Shan Muhammad on the spot. Other passengers sustained injuries.

There was an exchange of fire, but the culprits managed to escape unhurt. Four wounded victims were rushed to the Hayatabad Medical Complex where three of them succumbed to their injuries. They were identified as 11-year-old Bilal, Rehman, and a woman, whose name was not disclosed. The condition of the injured driver is said to be critical.

A political administration official Jahangir Azam confirmed the incident and said the area was cordoned off after the attack. He added that three suspects were also apprehended and shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation. Their names have not been revealed.

It was the second attack on the tribal elder, who had earlier been targeted by unidentified armed men last year.
