Ominous warning: Institutions need to mend their ways, says PHC CJ

Says judiciary is overburdened with responsibilities.

Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) Dost Muhammad Khan said on Saturday that state institutions need to “mend their ways” and vowed to crackdown on corruption.

Speaking to PHC staff members during New Year celebrations, Justice Khan said state institutions apart from the judiciary had become rusty and failed to bring an end to the miseries of the people.

He said the judiciary “would leave no stone unturned, whatever the consequences maybe,” adding that corruption had weakened state institutions. He said the nation could not prosper unless the vice was completely eliminated.

“We will start performing our professional obligations honestly, but other institutions also need to mend their ways.”

He said that every citizen should be treated equally to steer the country out of its present crisis. “We want to establish true rule of law to save the future of the country. But at the same time, we have been overburdened and cannot shoulder the duties of other institutions. We want to tell them (the government) to stop draining the national exchequer through illegal means, otherwise we can mend their ways,” warned the PHC chief justice.

“Conspiracies are being hatched against the sovereignty of the country, but we will never let the conspirers succeed.”

Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council (KPBC) on Saturday unanimously passed a resolution paying homage to Bashir Ahmed Bilour during a meeting with its chairman Advocate General Khalid Khan.

The resolution, tabled by Farooq Ahmed Khattak, was passed by KPBC members expressing sympathy for the bereaved Bilour family.

Elections for KPBC office bearers were also held during the meeting. The house unanimously elected Mansehra district’s Advocate Abdul Latif Khan as the vice chairman and Advocate Muhammad Arshad Awan as vice chairman for KPBC’s executive committee.
