Lifeline consumers, who consume up to 50 units of electricity in a month, have been exempted from the tariff revision.

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on Tuesday permitted the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) to increase its tariff by 46 paisa and 20 paisa per unit for the months of October and November respectively on account of monthly fluctuation in  fuel prices.

Lifeline consumers, who consume up to 50 units of electricity in a month, have been exempted from the tariff revision.

The regulator announced the decision at a public hearing held here on Tuesday where all the stakeholders were present. However, the revised tariff will not be applicable until the Islamabad High Court takes decision in a case that has challenged revisions in tariff with retrospective effect.

A Nepra official said the regulator would not notify the increase in power tariff under the fuel price adjustment mechanism by the time court took a final decision in the case.

According to Nepra, fuel cost variation for power generated by KESC in October stood at Rs645.741 million and in November at Rs371.304 million.

On the other hand, fuel cost variation for KESC based on power supplied from external sources was Rs7.449 million in October and Rs135.864 million in November. This resulted in total cost variation of Rs638.291 million in October and Rs235.439 million in November.

In October, the power utility sold 1.389 billion units of electricity to consumers and in November it sold 1.196 billion units. This showed total variation of 45.947 paisa per unit in October and 19.684 paisa per unit in November, Nepra said.
