Shahzeb Khan’s murder has attracted a groundswell of support on social media, piquing and unifying at the same time the interests of rights activists and key political blocs in the country.
Till Tuesday night, only a few hundred knew who Shahzeb was. Now, the deceased young man has become a symbol of change.
On Tuesday morning, Shahzeb was shot dead, allegedly by Shahrukh Jatoi over a petty argument, just as he returned from his sister’s wedding. His friends and family started a Facebook page in his honour.
As condemnations poured in from the micro-blogging website Twitter, the contours of a justice movement for Shahzeb began to take shape on social media. Since then, the movement has gained quite a following.
Talha Alam, a close friend of the deceased, said the movement was initiated not only for Shahzeb but for all those who have suffered at the hands of politically stronger factions of the society that both own and know how to use weapons.
Speaking about the outpouring of mass support, Alam said: “We are overwhelmed with the response. It is good to see that while he was our friend, for others he has become an icon for change against injustice.”
Alam recalled how he had lost another friend, Ali Shah, in a gun attack carried out out two years ago by members of the same caste. The case, however, was dropped due to political pressure.
“We will speak out nonetheless. No one has the right to kill our friend like this; no one has the right to kill anyone like this. We will keep fighting till the culprits are captured,” Alam said.
Muhammad Hassan, a blogger wrote, “We don’t realise, that someday, our siblings or relatives (can be the victims). The only way to stop these perpetrators is to be united. Please don’t let the sacrifice of this young boy go to waste.”
Human rights lawyer Ansar Burney, nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan and musician Salman Ahmad have all lent their support to the campaign, with the Ahmad tweeting, “While we struggle to move mountains of deception and deceit, do also remember Justice for Shahzeb Khan and Junoon for Change.”
Key political outfits such as Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf have also thrown their weight behind the movement.
MQM’s Rabita committee issued a press statement urging human rights activists to protest against Shahzeb’s murder and demanded President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf to take notice of the issue.
Shahzeb’s peers are planning a peaceful protest against his murder on Sunday afternoon at the Karachi Press Club, demanding suo motu action from the chief justice.
Action against the accused
The names of key suspects in Shahzeb Khan’s murder were put on the exit control list (ECL) and Shahrukh Jatoi’s photo has also been uploaded on Sindh police’s unofficial Facebook page.
In remarks broadcast on television, Sindh Assembly Deputy Speaker Shehla Raza claimed that Shahrukh Jatoi had been deported from Australia to Pakistan, because he had beaten up a teacher in his university.
A team of investigators, led by Darakshan Station Investigation Officer (SIO), Aslam Khakrani, has been dispatched to different areas of the province.
“We haven’t caught anyone as yet but hopefully we will be successful,” SIO Khakrani told The Express Tribune. Sources privy to the matter told The Express Tribune that the police have also detained at least three suspects, including Siraj Talpur’s servant, who harassed Shahzeb’s sister.
“Since the suspects’ families are influential, they obviously have links with the media,” Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Investigations Faizullah Karejo told The Express Tribune.
“We think some people from the media are passing on information to the suspects,” Karejo said, adding that the police were also trying to trace the families of the suspects who are also in hiding.

extremely sad. although i did not know shahzeb khan at all, every time i see his picture, i feel extremely extremely sad. a young life - his eyes are full of life, and seem so honest. where are we living and what has pakistan turned into? a cheap bloodbath where it is so easy to kill, brutalize, torment and kidnap anyone to settle petty feuds, alleged blasphemy, protect so-called 'honor'?
My prayers and best wishes for family and loved ones of shahzeb. may his soul rest in peace, and may his parents & family gain the strength to go on.
Shahzeb was a young boy only 20 years old and his sudden killing by some, is not forgettable for his known persons and relatives My son Hakeem Baloch was died on 01-12-2011 by negligence of Seventh Day Hospitals Karachi’s doctors He was only 27 years old, A intelligent boy worked in Geo News, Express News, and at the death time he was media Assistant in USA Consulate. My son is still in my heart every minutes So Shahzeb was a young boy, was born on 31st January 1992 and died on 25th December 2012 and was only son of his parent. I pray for his soul Allah place him his Heaven (Janat-ul-Firdos and patience for his parents and relative Muhammad Hanif Baloch (Lyari Karachi)
There is always other side of story. Dead person is always not victim. It is disgusting relating this killing to caste , race or finical background. Evil is evil , and have no face
This made me really sad: He beats up his teacher at the university?!
This is a tragic inccident, highly condemnable. we should stand up against the feudal mind set and lawlessness. This should be end now and culprits should be hanged in the streets.

we want no target killing in whole PAKISTAN so we want insaaf yr its really bad and we all are sad bcox of that accident
Another tragedy. It seems like tragedies have got a permanent residence permit of Pakistan. However, we must not forget that only we can change this course. We must believe in people's power and work hard to bring positive changes. People all over the world are exercising their power for changes and it is time for us to raise our societal conscious for a greater change. I wish all best to all who are struggling for change and justice.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever does”.

I am in a state of severe shock. The murder of Shahzeb in cold blood shows the trend of the feudals ruling us. Whosoever differs with them has to face dire consequences, is the message from the killer. Excesses, brutality & ethical poverty etc etc are rampant in this society. Justice is seen nowhere. Sanity has vanished, not to ever return. Beasts have been unleashed. Shahzeb sacrificed his life to save his sister thereby setting marvellous example for brothers to follow. May Almighty Allah bless the departed soul and grant courage to the bereaved family to sustain this irreparable loss. Amen.
Feudal and their likes have destroyed this Country. Unless and until average Pakistanis do not break-in their houses and eliminate these corrupt and characterless people along with their complete families, the fate of this Country is unlikely to change in a true manner. It is strange to think I once believed that our fate could change in an evolutionary and bloodless way. We will have to pay the price for the future of Pakistan in blood! The big question remains, are we ready for this? This is not a hate speech but a food for thought only!
Shahzeb was involved in fights also and being DSPs son he took advantage of it. What you sow shall you reap. I am tired of these people crying out when things go against you yet they take full advantage of it.
@agha hamid: Fully agree with your statements. When this nation develops a conscience things will change for the better overnight.
Karachi people are waiting ,when those killers will be arrested.
But can not wait more
Whole karachi people will stand and will fight with these so called fuedals, and will through them out from karachi
National conscience? Are you joking? This herd-cum-nation has seen imanay, sialkot boys, the state life building incident, Ali enterprises, and what not. This conscience is shaken only when a burger family is in distress. However the very fact that he stood for his family is rarely observed and he is definitely my hero. I would have done the same in a heartbeat. We need to dust these jatois, and saeens off our back. Too much b.s to take year after year.
@Zain: I am sure that would be the case unfortunately
It is crucial that justice is served for Shahzeb Khan! I fear that if it isn't served after this movement, it will never be served for anyone. Let's make this a precedent...lives of human beings are precious. They are not fair game for anyone on a thrill shooting spree. Let's take this first step towards saving our beloved Karachi from the jaws of the rich and powerful.
wow Shahruk Jatoi was deported from Aus because he had beaten his teacher. Saien-girri is not acceptable in good societies like WEST!
@Truth detector:
Because ordinary Pakistanis do not have alternative second country to go to...beside, they are patriotic, unlike the son of these elite class who can run away to any country overnight even though they are on ECL.....
@Thinker:
Sorry...do not single out Karachi only...it happens all over the Country....law is for the people who are not in the elite class....they are above all laws....
We Are The First One to Break the Photos of Shahrukh Jatoi Sindh Police Facebook Un-Official Page
Can anyone post picture of Shahrukh Jatoi?
My deepest sympathy for the family of this guy, who was killed. The ruling elite in paki is extremely messed up. They don't care much for internal dissent. There are way too many folks whose votes can be bought ... so they don't care about a handful of middle class folks taking to the streets. I hope that the rest of the world raises such a stink about this issue, that this guy the killer has no place to hide. The govt should not be allowed escape their responsibility. For decades, the govt has relied on the passive nature of the general public. The law enforcement department needs a major shake up, and people should not have to wait years to get justice. I love my country as much as person next to me, and have been extremely frustrated at the state of affairs during the last few years. Like many others, my blood too has boiled over at this incident. No country in the world deserves such an ineffective and corrupt government. It is beyond shocking how out of touch they are.
even if caught they will be set free due to lack of evidence. lets learn from Indian, put a show tom at CM house sindh at 11 am in support of dead
Shameful for all of us.These feudals are just another face of TALIBAN. Same Mindset of Brutality & Jahalat
Such criminals should be hanged in public. There is a reason why it is Islam allows public punishments. People take note and deter from doing such acts.
It will be a failure of the courts if this criminal is allowed to walk free.
Mr President and Prime Minister. We need an prompt response from government and we will protest until the justice is served.
@Zain:
I agree with you Zain. However, justice will be built in steps. Today the influential family has been shamed and is, at least officially, on the run. This would not have been the case 10 years ago...10 years ago, Shahrukh Jatoi would still be threatening the family and nobody would have been able to do anything about it. The scenario has changed in these last 10 years. I feel that if the CJP takes notice and takes action on this issue and media at least carries it that far, it will become another great leap forward in taking our society from the dark ages of feudalism to a SLIGHTLY more egalitarian society. There will unfortunately be many more case like this, we will need to rise up several times more just to make this place a little more livable. Such are the things one has to do to ensure that his home remains his home
there are alot of national outrages... yet nothing ever seems to change. as long as this trend of being fashionably rather than inherently angry continues, young men such as shazeb will continue to fall victim to such circumstances
You reap what you sow! It is tragic that ones life has been taken, and the loss sufferred by the family. Aside from this, we have a culture of bullies...might is right... And both the feudals and civil functionaries are into it. Yes son's of waderas we have a stero typical image, and is already seen how they roam the streets with armed guards, and all. But Senior Police wallas sons are the same. They even have more powers then their dad. So in this case, a feud gone wrong.
It really shocked news for every Pakistani that we are still spending our lives under control feudal system for government. It is also amazing for the citizen that police is unable to catch culprits because they are influential! Now it is a time to the right groups, secular parties and human right activists to come forward to stop such incident from the country.
Justice would be to catch him and hand him to the law for due process. No lynching. . If the law does not deliver satisfactory justice . . . then that needs to be fixed. . If it is not fixable because of dhandli of those in positions of influence . . . well then, you can't blame people for wanting to take the law into their own hands. . Lets hope that this culprit gets caught and justice prevails.
It's just the matter of few days that all the hype would setle down and the killers will be quietly released (if ever arrested) from their VIP treatment confinement and even media would be busy in other issues to think of this. Just a matter of few weeks at the most and that's that. We will remain the virtual slaves of feudals.
city of educated people occupied by educated illiterates@Thinker:
I hope and pray that this proves to be a trigerring point for curbing the menace of feudalism and vandalism from our country once and for all!!
Youth along patriotic people should march a protest till the culprit is arrested and shot in the head to do justice.
WE should select a time and place for the protest. Insaaf Pakistan!
So the term "stonned to death" seems to make some sense now. Kill them so horrifically that no one dares to do it again! ah.. but those who talk that way are generally called Islamic extremist..
We all condemn it. We all disdain the perpetrators of this heinous deed. But none of us would feel the need to step up and put an end to such atrocities, wreaked on the civilians by the powerful. No one would question their domain. We would cry over it for a week or two, and then it will disappear in the air. Facebook pages would exist but would seldom trigger an earnest movement to prevent such heinous from being carried out. It is the lack of justice that such acts are made possible. And the citizenry's proclivity to throw the weight of their hopes on those who have, time and again, proved to be ineffectual. As a nation, we need to take things in our own hands. The government is ineffectual because its sole purpose is not to govern but to keep stashing billions in banks abroad. We need to concede the fact that this is it! No more will the divide be tolerated. The law applies to everyone. The political elite cannot carry out such acts with impunity. There has to be consequences which would serve as a deterrent. It's high time we realize the urgency of this and initiate the indispensable movement.

This is a noble cause. However, PTI also needs to put weight behind ANP's stand against the Taliban who are inflicting unspeakable terror and tragedy upon people in FATA and KPK.
murderers picture on fb sindh police page! please share everyone so this murderer can be ashamed publicly.

Just like India.
Thousands of poor people die everyday. But when an upper-middle class person dies, the rich and powerful wake up.
@Truth detector: Your blaming ordinary pakistanis for the crime of jatoi?. Maybe its people like you who shoud be blamed for not having the intellect to deliever justice.
We all must condemn this criminal activity and how powerful culprits should be they must be brought to books. As per Tribune's own report, on average 6 people are reported to be killed each day in Karachi which means more than 2000 innocent poor people have died so far. This is shocking figure. The criminals gangs, violent political groups, sectarian fighters and influential people are involved in such crimes. We all must demand justice for every innocent person including Shahzeb. We must all send united signal that Accountability should be done for every criminal and its sponsor (irrespective of his class, faith, race or political affiliation) and none should be spared. Wake up Pakistan, let us free Karachi from all criminal and violent groups and parties. Finally thanks Tribune for reporting facts straight now, unlike yesterday's headline.
The cluprit should be brought to justice. Media should bring this news to highlight on the daily basis. Otherwise it will go again in underground.
Certainly encouraging. IK has also requested ISF members to join the rally on Sunday. I agree that it is high profile case so paying attention to it alone in the midst of all deaths might seem like elitist. But we have to remember human beings are anything but consistent. If people raise voice for Shahzeb today, they will also raise voice for deaths of other under-privileged people tomorrow. Let's build up the momentum.
It is ordinary Pakistanis fault. Why they live in country of feudal/plunderers/law-breakers, for feudal/plunderers/law-breakers !!! :->
May Allah bless his soul & help his family cope with this tragedy.
tragic. How can one kill a person on a small argument and still survive in society.thats crazy.it can only happen in Karachi (city of educated people)
