KARACHI:

After a lapse of almost three days, Gulshan police have registered an FIR for the attack on Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqui, the Karachi chief of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), formerly the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan.

The attack left six people, including four policemen, the ASWJ leader’s guard and driver, dead. Maulana Farooqui was driving to ASWJ’s central office at Jamia Masjid Siddiq-e-Akbar in the Nagan Chaurangi area on Tuesday, when gunmen lurking at Gulshan-e-Iqbal roundabout ambushed his motorcade. The cleric was scheduled to attend an ASWJ workers’ convention at the office. Gulshan-e-Iqbal SHO Rana Haseeb said that the FIR was registered under the Anti Terrorism Act and sections 324 (attempted murder) and 353 of the Pakistan Penal Code. The case had been registered on the complaint of ASWJ Karachi president Muhammad Nasir, said Haseeb. The FIR was registered against unidentified people, but the complainant added that three suspects can be identified by facial recognition.
