RAWALPINDI: A suspect was wounded in a crossfire between police and robbers at Samarzar in Rawalpindi late on Wednesday night. The suspect, identified as Saifullah, was shifted to District Headquarter (DHQ) Hospital in Raja Bazaar by police, where doctors described his condition as “critical”.

Saddar Circle Superintendent of Police (SP) Waheedur Rehman Khattak said Saifullah had been arrested by the Saddar Beruni police a few days back. During interrogations, he admitted to kidnapping a young girl from Chakwal. He admitted to keeping her in Murree, SP Khattak said. The girl was recovered and handed over to her family by the Chakwal police.

A case was registered against Saifullah. Later, he admitted to being involved in robberies, saying his gang had a hideout in Samarzar. He accompanied a police team to the location he had identified. The raiding team was fired upon by the suspected robbers. The police fired back. Saifullah was injured in the crossfire, SP Khattak said.

The other suspects managed to get away, he added. Saddar Beruni SHO and sub-inspector were not available for comments despite multiple attempts.
