Seven miners, including six of a family, were killed in an explosion in a coalmine in the Doli area of Lower Orakzai Agency early Monday.
Political administrator Nauman Khan told The Express Tribune that the blast took place around 3am due to the accumulation of poisonous gas in the coalmine. He added that locals rushed to the site soon after the explosion and retrieved the trapped bodies after a three-hour rescue operation. The mine is owned by a man identified as Haji Hussain.
Political authorities in the area said that seven people, including six brothers, were killed in the incident.
They were identified as Umar Saeed, Sher Saeed, Aqil Saeed, Gul Khan, Sher Khan, Muhammad Jan and Saeed Jan. They all belonged to Shangla district of Malakand division.
Their bodies have been shifted to their native village.
At least 50 miners have been killed and hundreds wounded due to explosions in the same mine in the past two years.
