Careless driving: 14 die, 28 injured in road accidents

Fourteen people were killed and 28 injured on Friday in road accidents in various cities of the Punjab.


In Gujranwala, nine people died and 16 were injured on Friday when a passenger van collided with a truck near Aimanabad. The injured were taken to Civil Hospital, where three of them were reported to be in a critical condition.

Rescue officials said the accident occurred near Darataywali village. They said a van, trying to over take a vehicle, had collided with a truck driving in the opposite direction. Residents of the area rushed to the rescue and pulled the injured from the wreck. Of the 16 people who died, four belonged to a single family and nine to a single tribe.

District coordination officer, Health Department officials and commissioner arrived at the hospital to inquire after the injured. Commissioner Abdul Jabbar Shaheen said that the injured were being treated free of cost. He said the hospital administration had been directed to call neuro surgeons from Lahore if needed.

DCO Najam Ahmed Shah said that he will request for compensation from the government for the injured and the families of the deceased.

In Faisalabad, a CNG cylinder exploded in a van, killing two people and injuring 10. The van was on its way to Burewala. Rescue officials said that the cylinder exploded as the van reached Chichawatni overhead bridge on GT Road. The van caught fire due to the explosion. A woman and a child died on the spot, while the 10 injured were taken to various hospitals. The fire was put out by Rescue 1122 fire fighters.

In Muzaffargarh, three people, including two children, died and two men were injured when a Qing Qi rickshaw was hit by a truck on Muzaffargarh-Mianwali Road. The rickshaw was headed towards Sultan Colony when the accident happened.

Muhammad Suleiman, Usama, 10, and Shahid, 8, who were riding the rickshaw, died on the spot. They belonged to Dera Ghazi Khan. Rickshaw driver, Khalil, and another passenger Akbar were injured. They were taken to a hospital, where doctors treating them said they would likely survive. The truck driver fled the scene.

It is also a sign of degrading state . Confused society and its youth do not have control on their mind resulting road accidents .
