Over 80 students of art and architecture paid homage to the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) on Wednesday. The event was organised in collaboration with the Brazilian embassy, said a press release.

Students took avid interest in photographs of Niemeyer’s work in Brasilia. They also watched a documentary “Life is a breath”, that tells the story of the architect’s long and prolific career.

Niemeyer, one of the most important architects of the 20th century, died on December 5 this year. He was 104 years. He largely contributed to the projects of the governmental buildings of Brasilia, the capital of Brazil and for the United Nations Headquarters, in New York.

Addressing the students, the Brazilian Ambassador Alfredo Leoni highlighted the contribution of Niemeyer to the development of Brazilian modern culture and promoting the country’s image in the world. The architect’s work can be found in many countries including the US, France, Italy and Algeria.

Moreover, the ambassador highlighted the inspiration Niemeyer is to architects and artists around the world. “You (the students) - as architects, designers and artists - can be a powerful tool of transformation,” he said.
