KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has devised a new format for the upcoming 14-team Quaid-e-Azam Trophy that starts from December 26.

Bahawalpur have been included for the four-day top-tier cricket while Karachi and Lahore will retain their two sides as usual. The teams will be divided into two groups of seven each on a league basis. At the end of the league-phase, the top four teams from each group will form two more groups and will compete against each other where top-placed sides will go onto contest the final.

Similarly, the teams finishing in bottom three will form two groups and the top two teams among the respective groups will contest another final. However, the winner of their final will not receive any title.

“We have tried to come up with a format that would motivate all the teams to do well,” a PCB official told The Express Tribune. “The teams finishing in upper-half will get nine matches at the end of league-phase while the lesser teams will play eight matches excluding the finals.”

The official seemed hopeful of the format’s success despite its complexity.

“The event format was finalised after lengthy deliberations and it is hasn’t been made in a hurry. We are confident that it will help improve the quality of cricket with the addition of five departmental players in each team.”
