The Paraplegic Centre, has decided to introduce spine surgery with quality post-operative care facility, in collaboration with the orthopaedic ward of the Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC).
The Paraplegic Centre and HMC have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) under which a team of doctors headed by one senior doctor will conduct weekly surgeries at the centre. Surgeries are expected to commence in the next two months.
“Government hospitals in the province provide poor post-operative care facilities, which increase complications for patients after they have spent a large amount on surgery,” said the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Paraplegic Centre, Syed Muhammad Ilyas.
“Free surgery will only be offered to patients who are admitted at the centre,” he said, adding that patients will only have to pay for the cost of spinal fixation implants. The cost of implants ranges from Rs25,000 to Rs150, 000 depending upon the quality.
Ilyas said the tenders for purchasing instruments and renovation of the operation theatre have been issued and the provincial government has agreed to contribute Rs10 million.
He added that spinal surgery costs Rs200,000 in government hospitals, but that they will try to minimise the total cost.
The centre is the only state-of-the-art facility providing free medical, surgical and nursing care along with physical, occupational and vocational psycho-social rehabilitation services to patients with spinal cord injuries from all over the country as well as Afghanistan.
Established by the International Red Cross Society (ICRC) in 1984 and currently run by the provincial government, the centre has so far treated around 7,500 patients.
