Graveyard land encroachment: DCO urges action against land mafia

PHC had ordered the civic body to regain such property.

PESHAWAR: The district government is preparing to launch an operation against land mafias to regain graveyard land in Akhunabad, Bakhshupul and Tajabad that has been encroached. Peshawar District Coordination Officer (DCO) Javed Marwat urged the need for action in a meeting at the CDG office before submitting a report at the Peshawar High Court (PHC) where a division bench is hearing the case. The PHC had taken suo moto notice about the encroached graveyard lands and ordered the civic body to regain such property. Senior officials, including town administers and the director of the Peshawar Development Authority attended the meeting. It was decided that they would ask the government for a sum of Rs50 million to construct a boundary wall around the graveyard land. While the date for the operation has not been decided, the DCO has instructed the police to keep personnel on standby to respond to any resistance from land grabbers during the anti-encroachment drive. In such cases, they have also been given the authority to lodge FIRs on the spot.
