KARACHI: One of the most sensitive places in Karachi has been turned into a relief goods donation spot as hundreds of students from different educational institutes in the city are turning up at the Governor House on the request of Sindh Governor Ishratul Ebad to pack Eid gifts for flood survivors.

“We want them [flood survivors] to celebrate Eid like us,” said a student volunteer. The governor met the students and commended their work. “This is a small effort to spread joy among the flood-affected people,” he said.

The packing will continue till a day before Eid. Students from more than 30 private and government institutions across Karachi are taking part in the drive. They are brought to the Governor House in their college buses.

Around 200 students sat down on the polished floors of the Governor House on Sunday evening and made Eid packages for flood survivors. Each package is for a family of six and includes ready-made Eid clothes, biscuits, Khajoor, bangles and other items.

These goods have been donated in massive quantities by various civil society organisations and individuals. Students too have taken part in fundraising activities and contributed to the fund.

According to the governor, these activities will continue after Eid as well. The object is to assimilate students into relief work and enable them to go to flood-affected areas as well.

“I want Karachi’s children to go out and help others,” he said, adding that this will help overcome cultural and language barriers.

It will also be a learning experience and these students will be able to feel the pain of their compatriots when they see the situation for themselves.
