In the wake of the Supreme Court calling for the delimitation of new constituencies in Karachi, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain has called the court’s remarks “unconstitutional” and “undemocratic”.
The Supreme Court does not have the authority to say that constituencies should be formed in such a way that a single-party majority does not exist, Hussain said during an address to MQM representatives in Karachi.
The MQM, which is the ruling party in Karachi, has several constituencies that are considered to be key strongholds.
Hussain claimed the observation was a well thought out plan to break the MQM’s majority mandate and speculated that this would spark ethnic discord.
He said such remarks were widening the sense of disenfranchisement among the people of Karachi.
He added the remarks amounted to contempt for the mandate given by the people of Karachi and presented an “open enmity” for the metropolitan.
Hussain called on Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, President Asif Ali Zardari and the federal government to take notice of the remarks, adding that constitutional action should be taken against the judges who made these comments.
He said that the delimitation of constituencies without a new census was against the spirit of the Constitution.
He questioned why the formula suggested for Karachi was not being applied to the rest of the country, when there were cities throughout Pakistan where one party or another had a majority.
The MQM chief said it was the right of Karachi’s residents to vote for whom they wanted and that no one had the right to take this away from them. He termed the move an “act of gerrymandering.”
Hussain said if the Supreme Court’s observations were in light of the security situation in Karachi, then by comparison, Balochistan was in a far worse situation wherein the nation’s flag could not be raised in half of the province.
The Supreme Court, he noted, had not issued any such order there. Similarly, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa was wracked with terrorism, but such remarks were not made about the province, he added.
Hussain called on party workers to get physically prepared to fight undemocratic, tyrannical and unconstitutional acts.
“Not only do Karachiites reject these remarks, they also appeal that no plans be put into place to further divide Pakistan,” he said.

Unwise words from a UK citizen criticizing our courts. If MQM has mandate as they claim, then they need not worry. Let others raise a concern too n not be physical, as Hussain says! Be a pakistani. Not a language siding educated class please
I second to Altaf Hussains comments. The city will witness unprecedented divide and rights violation by such actions. Those who conspire against Karachi, what makes them think they will profit from divisions. Own the city, work for its peace and the people will be leading themselves to vote for the otherwise. Else, they just see MQM as their voting option for now.
Who has authorised a UK citizen to criticise judiciary of Pakistan?? By siding with every government since 1987 and enjoying the ministries & extortions for over 15 years, he tries to write his own definitions of "unconstitutional" and "undemocratic".
This just depicts the laten hae of the Judges against Muhajirs . Kangaroo court after all .Why they are after Karachi is very obvious , they want the golden egg laying goose .If these judges are so neutral ,divide the constituency in punjab .kpk and Interior Sindh .We will not tolearte these underhand biased decisions .
"He said that the delimitation of constituencies without a new census was against the spirit of the Constitution."
I suppose it is quite alrite to have a 200-yard house in Karachi having 639 registered voters, with the plot located in the NA 251 constituency, a stronghold of MQM. It is indeed well within the spirit of the Constitution, as it were.
Moreover, "Hussain called on party workers to get physically prepared to fight undemocratic, tyrannical and unconstitutional acts."
Well, well. I guess we all know what that means. Says it all about the Party concerned, doesnt it! MQM is at best a bunch of trigger happy goons under a pseudo-political banner ......
MQM has a problem everytime the Court gives a decision about Karachi. Where are the other stakeholders in Karachi?
Good step taking by Supreme Court .
Truth always comes out.The statement of Mr.Quaid depicts the bases of high volume votes, used to be casted in the under refered constitutences, are results of some undemocratic techniques. We must be fair to our democtratic process by listening, pointing out basic problems and resolving/reconciling these issues with open hearts. Our Quaid is requested to prepare our people for tolerance not to prepare for stop physical actions/resistance.Involement of Physical (actions) is root cause of terrorism(insurgency) in the country. So please respect others view points, and be optimistic in your thoughts and educate people to live and let live which is true democracy.
SC gave historic decision against illegal delimitation, and bogus votes. It is a victory for democracy and hopefully people of Pakistan will have free and fair elections. Every one knows how delimitation of constituencies were done during Mushraf era and how particular parties and pro-Mushraf groups were favored. This must be undone and equal and fair playing field should be given to all political parties. MQM was one of the biggest beneficiary of Mushraf era and as they are so called democratic party, they should support free and fair polls and welcome the SC's decision to undo illegal delimitations done in Karachi.
