The medical report claimed that no one can die even after consuming the entire bottle, but those who died probably consumed 2-3 bottles and had mixed some sort of an intoxicant in the syrup.
People have also been using cough syrups of six big and seven local companies as drugs, the report added.
The deaths occurred in the Shahdra Town neighbourhood between Friday and Sunday with the victims mostly drug addicts who took the syrup, named Tyno, to get high.
The Punjab Health Department has imposed a ban on Tyno, which is manufactured by Reko Pharmacal Lahore. According to a Health Department spokesperson, all drug inspectors have been issued immediate instructions to drop the existing stock of Tyno and ensure a blanket ban on its sale.

Pls any one help give me detail this company other product name.
impossible that there was nothing wrong with the syrup and 16 people dies within a short span of time. 1 or 2 we can believe but 16 is impossible. Did Tyno's manufacturer pay for this news report?
Banning a drug is not a solution there is ban on opium and other such products even than the people use these things the Pharma co produce the medicine for the benefit of the people and if it is misused it is not the fault of the Pharma co.
The manufacturer has been making this drug and a lot of others for a number of years and enjoys a good repute in industry. All pharma manufacturers follow very strict safety guidelines, retain samples and suppliers of raw material etc. which are easily traceable.
Unfortunately conclusions were drawn before an investigation even started which raises questions on the credibility and motives of such rumor mongers.
Drug addicts or not, whatever the cause or reason, let the investigation take its full course.
Such medicines have ALWAYS been available with ample opportunities for misuse! How is it that suddenly people are dying due to 'overdose' as is being claimed by the Punjab Health Ministry? And especially in a particular area. Big mystery! Lots of answers needed!
After this news atleast have the decency to remove the editorial "bottled death" and pictures of the product from every page. Have the courage to accept your mistake and apologise to clear the misunderstanding regarding the product given to all your viewers. Shame on Media. Din't expect this from ET
So how about a public apology from ET atleast (being the most reputable paper in the market) for tarnishing the image of the company by bashing it over for 3-4 days labelling it as "toxic cough syrup" even before the report. It is worth mentioning that if you read all other online news you will find out that 95% of the content is word to word same on all websites which shows all newspapers are simply copy pasting from each other without any fact finding whatsoever. Cheap popularity channels like city 42 create negative hype about any incidence without any facts and all other channels rush to defame anyone any everyone coming their way. Its high time all media channels stand up to an apology as all reports have cleared the product of any toxic elements. The manufacturer should sue all media channels for defamation which will be the only way to teach them a lesson to investigate first and then report. Extremely unfair and unethical behaviour displayed by our immature media.
Health department, have you done any autopsy before making a claim that victims had consumed 2, 3 "hundred" bottles? Saeen tu saeen, saeen ke science aur saeen ke logic b saeen.
It surprises me that 15 people decided to overdose themselves on a same day. Healthcare officials are very smart in giving clarification.
what a load of tosh
Punjab government should consider making alcohol more accessible like Sindh government has done and stop this menace altogether.
Ban or not, people are going to drink. May be allowing and regulating alcohol is not a bad at all. Atleast it can be controlled, state can generate revenue and these kind of events can be avoided.
Tyno to go to court if there was defamation. That's the only way the media will learn to stop being so hyper all the time.
Did they all die the same day? If so isnt that too much of a coincidence ? I do not think anything is conclusive as yet.
Too much of anything will kill you.
@JOHN: As per your comment "since no death due to coughsyrup was reported earlier ,it is assumed that 15 people in distant areas connected themself by FB and decided to take 2-3 bottles and die…." ALL the deceased are from the SAME area of Shahdara town in Lahore. Hence, the idea of the deceased being from distant area is completely incorrect!
@Kamran Naqvi: wow !! funny how you referenced PTI in your comment which was totally out of context and what's more funny is that after reading the above article all you could think about was PTI.....who's a troll now ??
Solution: legalize alcohol.
CIA-RAW-Mossad can not be ruled out.
since no death due to coughsyrup was reported earlier ,it is assumed that 15 people in distant areas connected themself by FB and decided to take 2-3 bottles and die....
these are all signs of quayamat coming very soon
The comment above explains nicely the important role that a pharmacist has to play in the community. Unfortunately, pharmacists are not really considered an important part of the healthcare delivery chain. This incident just proved how important they are
watch tyno sales skyrocket
@FJ: a.k.a as A. Rehman Malik style.
It is really too late for the Pharmaceutical industry though however, they have had their image tarnished and torn apart by this horrific media. I think they deserve a public apology from the media as soon as possible in order to clear the name ASAP!
Death due to overdosing on narcotic products is a global phenomena and it is not unique to Pakistan. Globally Death due to overdosing on narcotic prescriptions such as oxycodone, a pain medicine, is blamed for numerous deaths. In last few months companies have changed the formulation to prevent the tablet of oxycodone from dissolving in liquid to prevent its abuse in shooting intravenously by the addicts. It is the obligation of the pharmacist to know their customer. If someone is buying large amount on a daily basis should be a warning sign. In such case they have numerous choices including refusing to sell, to dispense Nalaxone tab as an antidote and to reporting to law enforcement etc
It's too late for the company's reputation though isn't it? It's a shame that the Pakistani media acts like vultures, waiting for a story to pounce on without even gathering the facts.
...or if they want to ban this cough syrup then all other cough syrups should be banned as well.
If the victims took overdose of this medicine then why to ban it? I think government should ban those pharmacies or drug shops which allowed to sale deadly quantity of cough syrup!
consumed 2-3 bottles !!!! did they consider it as Pepsi?
It is incredible that an overdose of a cough syrup can kill people.
Cough syrup is well known as a cheap way to get intoxicated around the world. People usually respond by limiting the amount of bottles purchasable by a single person rather than go after the manufacturers.
No offense, but even Benadryl has hallucination elements in its formulate and many other cough syrups including Sancose has Ephedrine in it which needs no introduction. The Postmortem will confirm the consumed quantity. People actually do take such syrups to get high. Our Forensic department, i hope, has some kind of way to test this. Its same as abusing Drugs as recreational Drugs.
We will have another sham show of corrective action, the true culprit, i.e. the license issuing government will slip aside just like the mastermind hooligan in the bakery assault.
Surprisingly, there is no criticism on Punjab Government from PTI trolls !
*shame on pak media * for blaming manufacturer without proof
