MIRANSHAH:

An influential pro-government tribe has announced it will form a peace militia to curb terrorist activities in North Waziristan Agency (NWA).

At the grand jirga of the Uthmanzai sub-tribe, part of the Wazir tribe, in Miranshah on Thursday, tribal elders decided to set up a militia comprising a hundred tribesmen to punish those involved in sabotaging peace, carrying out kidnapping for ransom and attacking security forces.

The militia will patrol different parts of the agency, looking out for mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and thwarting any possible militant attacks.

Elders at the jirga also assured the political administration that they will allow the resumption of polio eradication efforts as well. While reiterating the 2007 peace accord with the government, they urged it to resolve the electricity suspension in the agency.

They warned, however, that if the government failed, the tribesmen would go to any extent to redress the problem.
