HARIPUR:

The Telephone Industries of Pakistan (TIP) has terminated 62 of its employees and have denied them salaries for the past five months, official sources told The Express Tribune here on Wednesday.

The employees include four female teachers, watchmen, nurses and sanitary workers who had been working on daily wages at TIP’s estate office, hospital, schools and the main factory since July.

The terminated employees have termed the decision unjust and have demanded of the government for their early restoration.

TIP Estate Officer Waseem Mirza confirmed the report, adding that the employees were sacked on the orders of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the parent organisation of TIP. He said that according to a circular issued by the ministry, all appointment made after July 1 would stand cancelled and their salaries will not be disbursed.

An official of the TIP administration, requesting anonymity, said the workers were employed during the tenure of the former managing director Javed Safdar when the organisation was undergoing a financial crisis.

“Our departments are still in need of employees but the government, which claims to be pro-people, has snatched the source of earning from us,” said Arshad Sharif. Another sacked employee, Nasir Mushtaq said
that the decision has exposed his family to financial problem.
