It’s ironic that when the entity now known as Hamas was on the rise in the occupied territories, it was, if not encouraged, then certainly tolerated by Israel. This is because the Islamist group, being both anti-communist and anti-nationalist, was seen as an effective counter to the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), which then enjoyed a monopoly on the Palestinian struggle. These were the heydays of Arab nationalism and its champion was the hero of Suez, Gamal Abdul Nasser. But then came the rise and fall of the United Arab Republic, the debacles of the Arab-Israeli wars and pan-Arabism suddenly seemed to lose its lustre. Politics, much like nature, abhors a vacuum and it was inevitable that another force would fill the gap.
Israel’s battering of Fatah and its refusal to effectively negotiate with the PLO eventually led to the rise of Hamas as a credible Palestinian force, and if the Israeli government had any foresight, it would realise that destroying Hamas would only lead to an even more radical group taking power. Perhaps, this would be Islamic Jihad or an al Qaeda linked group. Of course, imperialists are nothing if not short-sighted and even after Hamas won the elections in 2006, the US and Israel tried their best to isolate it in the hope that it would somehow fade away. It did not, and if there is one clear outcome of the Israeli attacks, it is that Hamas is now a recognised force. Not once in this conflict was Fatah or the ‘official’ peace partner, Mahmoud Abbas, even mentioned and reports from the West Bank reported an equal amount of rage at Israel and the Palestinian Authority. In Gaza itself, armed groups that had often found themselves at odds were seen cooperating under, and seemingly acquiescing to, Hamas’s authority. From Egypt to Turkey to Tunisia and the Arab League, delegation after delegation visited Gaza to show solidarity with the besieged strip and Hamas leaders clearly basked in the attention. For the uber-hawk Netanyahu, this was an unintended consequence of the attack. The desired outcome for Netanyahu, who presides over one of the most rightwing governments in Israel’s history, was to burnish his ‘tough guy’ credentials ahead of the parliamentary elections.
Strategically, another objective may have been to remove Hamas’s capabilities and deny it the ability to strike at Israel in the event of an Israeli strike on Iran. He failed on both counts, as that capability can easily be rebuilt. Having campaigned on a platform of “ensur[ing] that the Hamas reign of terror will collapse”, Netanyahu has in fact ended up strengthening the movement and weakening his own support base.
So, if Israel’s warmongers lost, who apart from Hamas has won? While Turkey has cemented its position, it is Egypt that has again emerged as a power broker. Negotiating and guaranteeing a ceasefire not only establishes it as a responsible power that can ‘do business’, but its stance on the conflict also burnishes its standing on the Arab street which, after the Arab Spring, is a force to be reckoned with. It is a further source of anxiety for Israel that Hamas springs from the same Muslim Brotherhood that now rules Egypt. How pushed will Mohamed Morsi be in interdicting weapon supplies to Gaza is a question that will haunt Israel’s policymakers.
Speaking of weapons, the Fajr rockets that reached Tel Aviv were supplied by Iran, which must be a source of some pleasure for the rulers there, who have otherwise faced an annus horriblis. The failure of Israel to sustain the offensive also makes the prospect of an Israeli strike on Iran seem more distant; which may be some compensation for Tehran losing the spotlight to Cairo. Notably absent in this picture are the Saudis and Gulf states, who must be wary of any Hamas success given that they are already engaged in a proxy war in Syria with Hamas’s main backer, Iran. Egypt’s rise will also ruffle Saudi feathers, as it is these two countries that have traditionally vied for dominance in the Arab world. One person who must be cursing the ceasefire is Bashar Al-Assad, who will have welcomed the Israeli attack for having distracted the world from his own daily massacres of the Syrian people. With that conflict ended, the focus will again be on Syria, where the survival of the regime seems unlikely. His fall will signal the final end of the Middle East that Israel knew and loved, and it seems that no one in Tel Aviv understands just how deeply its neighbourhood has changed. Will Israel change as well? Or will it stick to its policies of aggression and toxic nationalism? One hopes for the former, but experience indicates it will be the latter. In that case, it may be a long, cold winter for Israel.

Hamas is backed by Saudis, etc even if Saudis do not like the present Syrian regime which is backed by Iran whose missiles were used by Hamas. Reasons are simple and obvious, and I am surprised that the author who is writing on Middle East conflict is unaware of them!
Genius
Aaah, I should have read more. You are nutcase if you think Muslims are to establish Allah's authority and mouth inanities about tyrants at the same time.
Many people want to establish the authority of the representative majority, not Allah's, not Muslims'.
Can your notions of democracy or whatever else appeals to you deal with it?
Achaa Jee - Mr. Kanwal, so you think they are migrants who don't have a right on that land? In that case, is the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan prepared to grant land concessions to Zoroastrians, Hindu and Sikh Punjabis, and Hindu Sindhis, who were all driven out of their own homelands because of a certain group of people baying for blood to create Islamic sharia compliant states? Please do tell.
If you want the world's only Jewish state of Israel (and one of the world's smallest states) to concede land, please understand that the rest of the non Muslim world is wondering if any of the many Islamic states that exist in this world are willing to cede land as well.
By the way, I understand that Israel already desisted from taking the Sinai Peninsula after winning it in war. Has any Islamic army ever ceded land that it conquered for the sake of peace? I don't think so.
@ John True Afghan and Persian invaders came to India. They were not Islamic if they were invaders. They were not Islamic if they resorted to establishing Kingdoms. Islamic system was, when it existed, a system of the people, by the people for the people. For this reason tribes after tribes, nations after nations fell for it and in no time this system spread in like a wild fire every direction. No one would accept Islamic faith if they were invaded by Muslims. No one will accept Islamic faith if people saw the same injustices i.e. Kingdom that had been ruling over them for centuries. So what difference did the people see to make them interested in Islam? It was a system of the people managed by the people. People in true Islamic system were participants in those matters that affected them. Neither you will know about true Islamic system nor would do millions of people calling themselves Muslims. Why? Autocracy took over from the envy of democray when people became lazy and uinterested in shouldering responsibilties that has been placed on the shoulder of every Muslim. Every Muslim has been made respponsible to create the authority of Lord almighty. But as William Penn rightly said "Tyrants govern those who do not like to be governed by God". Today every one including people calling themselves Muslims are being governed by tyrants. Why? Muslims are not Muslims. If there is autocracy anywhere, then it is not by Muslims. Muslims create the Autocracy of Lord Almighty only. They do so through the Islamic sytem. A system of the people, by the people, for the people. What people? Dedicated to worship no man. What you know about Islamic system was a system where human allah was created and worshipped.
@Falcon: In a very general sense can agree, but those signals you refer to have been around for some time and are directed more to the Zionist movement than towards the state of Israel. It would be wrong to read too much into the shift to South Asia / Far East because, let us not forget, the whole world is their playground.
@john you have just come across one such pakistani now. lol. on a serious note,i think you steered clear of all the humanitarian questions i raised. i would suggest you try and meet a lot of normal everyday people of Pakitan. You can try Karachi university as a starter. pls be assured i am not denying israel's right to exist next to arabs. i am questioning the legality of the foundation of israel and its never ending settlements. i think they should stop usurping the palestinian land NOW. and follow UN reolutions. otherwise their regime must be changed with the help of UN so the palestinians could breath and the israeli population could settle down properly. And if some non-local jewish religious fanatics still beleive they have a right to the land because it their "holy" origin, they must be treated with iron hand and relevant psychotropic drugs. i think there is hardly enough space left in that land for anymore engineered immigration. Your argument implies that being a muslim, i must be longing to go settle down in medina or mecca. No sir, i dont. its idiotic and unfair. And my city is karachi. so i should have every right to stay here in peace. full stop.
@Genius..
Good you are reminding history to everyone. And if you replace the word palestine with Bharath, the romans and europeans with islamic invaders, your story must fit very well for India.
@Kanwal
I don't really understand your concept of immigrants/settlers. Look at the history of pakistan itself. I am yet to come across a pakistani who believes his/her ancestors were from the sub-continent. Almost everyone talks about an ARAB ancestory. And look at the neighbours of pakistan which is Afghanistan, Iran, India and Tajikistan. None of these countries consider themselves as ARABS. If Pakistanis are of ARAB ancestory, in what way Pakistan is different from Israel?? If Pakistan can live with its own concept and heritage in the midst of people who donot believe in what pakistan believes, why can't Israel exist the same way without mingling with its neighbours? Now let me know if there is a proper reason to deny Israel's existence!!
This land i.e. Palestine. belongs to no one else than the Palestinian Jews, Christains and Muslims and this land will certaily revert back to the ownership of its true owners one day. Not today but eventually . How can anyone say so? By taking lessons from the history of this land. One should never forget that in this land are buried the holy ancestors of the Palestinian people and these holy souls have never tolerated this land to remain under occupation of Godless Romans. The history of this land tells us that this land came under occupation of Europeans about 2000 years ago. The Europeans brought to this land the culture of Might is Right i.e. unholy unGodly culture of discrimination, injustices, violence and bloodshed. Those Europeans had to go back after spending nearly 200 years of occupation. Peace prevailed again when the Asian people took charge of this land. About 1000 years ago this land saw invasion of the Europeans again. Once again the Asian people of this land had to endure the unholy unGodly culture at the hands of the children of the Godless Romans. Once again after nearly 200 years the European invaders were thrown out of this land. Today it is the third time that one sees the unholy unGodly culture of discrimination, injustices, violence and bloodshed in practice by the invading Europeans. What does it mean? The unholy unGodly Romans never came to this land to live in peace. Discrimination, injustices, violence, bloodshed is their religion. Do we not see such things happening in this land of peace today? Peace will return to this land when the trouble making children of Rome are thrown out of this land. It looks so impossible today. Does it now? It also looked impossible about 1950 years ago but it happened. Happened twice before.
Good analysis!
@omega Do you truly believe what you just said? First, i dont think someone who has seen the holocaust atrocities could let injustice happen to other nations who have done nothing to them. I dont think jews are inhuman. Second, by extension of your argument, afghans need a homeland in USA IMMEDIATELY. Lol. Third point is, in your opinion, jews had to be compensated somehow. I am sure you will give the same choice to Palestinians who were living there. I can never imagine my mother telling me to snatch some other child's toy for my own fun. And it would nt matter if she has not got ANY toy for me either. I dont think it were holocaust facing jews who could inflict such pain on another nation. They knew what it was like. At some point in next hundred years, hopefully the human race will rise for embracing the religion of justice. I dont insinuate the jews would be defending the founding fathers of Israel then. Pls keep the regime and the people of Israel separate. How is that for me be

this ceasefire is victory for Israel, they have the ability to turn the shame to pride, defeat to victory....they can do this, because they learn there lessons very well. the Jews (Israelis) will go back to their drawing boards , get into their research labs, put on their thinking hat, invest money in research and will come up with a new advanced weapon that will set a new benchmark for the whole world in terms of sophistication,advanced technology, and display an engineering marvel which will astonish the world. this all happens because, after every war the Israelis analyse every aspect of the war, learn the tactics used by hammas,decipher their moves, figure out who masterminded it and will make plans for the future and will stay prepared for it. where as the Palestinians and hammas, after every ceasefire, declare holidays, lead a pompous victory parade in the streets shouting death chants to Israelis, and at the end, go to the mosque to pray 5 times a day. This is what they have been doing for the past 1400 years and will do the the same for the next 1400 years and more. now, do you know why the Israelis rule and the Palestinians will never. understand why the west and non-Islamic countries support the Israel
@kanwal: Jews urgently wanted country for them after the they were religiously hunted by Nazis and millions lost their life just because they were Jews, they felt as second citizen and unsafe in many countries. so they chose their sacred land. can you blame them? you cannot agree that because they are Jews and you are muslims.
Where is my favourite columinist Kamran Shafi's article that appears on every Friday?
@pasha I am muslim and yet i think a few things in life must be spared the references from Quran /hadees. Common sense says the settlers and immigrants i am talking about were the ones/ who came to israel and were settled there on pretext of holocaust. I dont know when was this land grabbed by arabs from natives. But extending your theory, we may as well take all the 3million afghan refugees of pakistan to USA or australia, kicking the locals out, because afterall, the locals are the generation of people who grabbed that land, right? So you kill millions of jews, send them to a foreign land forever and displace the locals. Thats how it happens?
There is a lesson in it for all Pakistani Pakistan bashers--ask the Gazan's what is the value of freedom and independence and it will hopefully clear your Bollywood induced fantasies about your own homeland. I salute you Jinnah for saving us from a similar fate.
Like most things in life it depends on your perspective. Bibi may not have pleased the hard liners but accepting a cease fire when you have overwhelming military superiority is going to improve his diplomatic stature at both home and abroad - not bad for a guy with a reputation as a war monger. Most of the World has gone out of it's way to support Egypt's new Democracy throwing kudos towards their mediation role - but I would observe that Morsi couldn't even pull together a temporary cease fire without having Clinton fly it - not a good sign. Hamas use of long distance Iranian rockets proved a couple of things 1) Egypt can't be trusted to secure their border and 2) Iranian rockets are no more accurate than Germany's WW2 V-1 rockets - they fly far and are highly inaccurate. The Editor somehow believes that Hamas came out a winner in this battle -- using his criteria I suppose he believes they won the last one as well -- I suspect not many other do.
@Kanwal:
Well... originally Jews were always in Israel, ain't they? Consult Quran and hadees to confirm it. They are the native settlers of the land drove away by Arab (read Muslim) attackers.
As expected the Palestinians (like Muslims on any issue) "won" even though they got pummeled. They believe in an absolute solutions and complete elimination of the other. Many attempts at peace have been made. The two most comprehensive peace efforts - Oslo and Camp David, were rejected by Palestinians even though they were getting their state and almost everything with it including massive capital to invest from the Arabs and Americans. But it was 100% or nothing, and they chose the latter. They could have proposed something imaginative to get what they did not - in the future or something in return for it. They chose to reject the dignity and prosperity that peace would bring. Playing victim and blaming the Americans and of course the Jews is far more convenient. Shooting rockets is the preffered and only method of negotiation. This does no justice to the Palestinian cause and brings no security.
Remember when Ariel Sharon charged into Lebanon and drove Abu Arafat out of that country to save his skin? Wasn't that immediately after King of Jordan had kicked him out of his country for conspiring against him? How much more difficult can it be for Israel to turn Gaza into a graveyard at its will and convenience? From all indications, this ceasefire has a lifespan of about 24 to 48 hours. Nitty-gritty of a longer ceasefire (not peace) shall be discussed after that unless Hamas is idiotic enough to send even one rocket into Israel between now and then, when all bets will be off. Bibi and Clinton have made that crystal clear. Bottom line: Hamas got to test some of its newly-acquired rockets. Yes, some of them did reach Tel Aviv. More importantly, Israel got to test its "Iron Dome" over Israel anti-Missile defence. According to Wall Street Journal, it is "a military feat in the sky". It was 90% successful in interdicting and destroying incoming rockets. Mind you, according to the intelligence built into it, it is not programmed to interdict those rockets not likely to hit populated areas because every interdiction cost upwards of ten times the cost of the rocket itself. However, if you factor in number of lives saved, it is still worth the cost. But then, a ground assault will accomplish both and then some. Engineers, buoyed by its performance, are probably already working on further improvements which cannot be good news for Hamas and its backers. Another bottom line: While Hamas can no longer send rockets into Israel, its basic demand to lift the Israeli blockade around Gaza was turned down. And, that blockade, both sea and land, continues. The only winner in all this has been President Morsi of Egypt. Both his and his country's prestige has gone up after It had nosedived under Hosni Mubarak. This analysis is yet another feel-good piece to reassure Muslims worldwide that all is not lost. The facts on the ground are that Muslims are losing every encounter with every Tom, Dick and Harry in the world. Who would want to grudge "Dil ke bahlaane ko Ghalib, yehi khayal achha hai!"!
Be it Palestine or Kashmir or any other region of the world where the people of Islamic faith are in a fight with the rest of the people - a 'just solution' or 'a compromise' means only one thing for the Islamic faction - the other side should just give up their own demands and conditions and just surrender ! No wonder, these trouble spots are festering for so long and will continue to do so in the future.
@numbersnumbers Well, i think originally Israel did nt have any right whatsoever on that piece of land. so i am a bit inclined towards Hamas about that. ~Problem is, as a human being i truly understand and appreciate that its impossible for the current generation of Israel to be settled back into the lands of europe from where they were expelled to this current location. So the United Nations' resolution should be implemented as a starter and NO MORE settlers/immigrants must be allowed in Israel untill and unless all the displaced Palestinians are settled and have been given their rights. And i also think the western nations responsible for holocaust and for the founding of Israel must foot the bill for this whole plan. As for what i think of Hamas: i think they have every right to defend the tiny piece of land they are elected from. Afterall, when some rogue state like Israel keeps you under seige for decades, fires on your children playing football near their borders and kills your military chief extra judicially, you will feel murderous for them, wont you? And if Israel keeps destroying UN resolutions and keeps doing all these atrocities, a regime change must occur there, forced by UN. I think Hamas is so far the best response for the war criminals like Israeli regime. And Israelis are going downhill in this regard.
What a naive piece. Author has mixed his wish lists and ambitions with analysis. Does he really think Egyptians can take a stand against US or Israel? See Muslim brotherhood's ideology and their promises before elections about enforcing Islam and supporting Palestinian cause and now their action. Not a single day passes they ensure Israel and US for their security. And even they are loosing support in Egypt for their failure to implement hardwore Islam which they promised?
Oh so you take Turkey some serious? Turkey had once a role in brokering peace and mediating talks between Syria with Israel? With Ordegan's stupid moves to snatch palestenian card from Iran, now neither Israeli trust them nor they can afford to support Hamas in the Iran did?
So Bashar is happy, Iran has been sidelined and saved from attack. You probably see recent newspapers how much Iranian were threatened by Israeli attacks or Bashaar is saying about the attack or even...
You must be joking Mr. Khuhro or might be I expected too much from you. If civility hadn't bared from saying good words, I must have said this is utter nonsense and stupid piece, but let's not say this but you completely disappointed me!
Very informative piece. It is always an educational experience to read Zarrar's op-eds.
@Parvez: Recent shift in American policy from Middle East towards South & East Asia is reflective of slowly declining support for Israel among the masses of U.S. & Europe. It might be occurring at a glacial pace but signals are out there.
@Kanwal: I recall that the position of HAMAS being that Israel does not have the right to exist. Please indicate your position on this issue to see what "arrogance" you may exhibit!
I am sorry, HAMAS has won? Precisely the line of thinking that we in Pakistan had won the war in 1971. I am not an apologist for Israel for I think Israelis have not dealt with Palestinian in a fair manner, and that they must agree with the two state solution. But before you glorify HAMAS, the fact remains that HAMAS drove out more moderate Fatah of Mahmud Abbas from Gaza Strip, killing many Fatah members, with the promise that they will run the government more efficiently and win Palestinian independence. HAMAS had nothing much to show except for their aggressive and militaristic stance towards Israel and Jehadi agenda. The excuse Israel used for the naval blockade of Gaza was that HAMAS was importing weapons to be used against the state of Israel. This aggressive stance of HAMAS however makes the Arab street proud to their detriment. In reality however, this strategy is disastrous for long-term Palestinian well being. You see, in the past Fatah had used the same strategy of confrontation towards Israelis as well. Did it succeed? No. Reason: acute power imbalance between Palestinians and the state of Israel. Fatah was tamed and now a partner in Oslo Peace process. I admit that Oslo had not helped Fatah gain much but at least they are working with and acceptable to the outside world which matters. The sound of threats and belligerence from HAMAS is music to Israeli right wing ear as it meshes well into their narrative that Arabs want to physically destroy Israel and hence Israel needs to keep Palestinians under subjugation. Now given the power imbalance between the Palestinian and Israelis, which you have completely ignored in your analysis, the aggressive stance of HAMAS will only perpetuate Palestinian misery. Gaza Strip was a prison riot for Israelis. The head of HAMAS military, Ahmed Jaabari, was killed during the first day of attack. You call it a win or even a match. Very Sad!
You have drawn a picture of the position as you see it, showing Israel slowly being pushed into a corner and being vulnerable. Is that a true picture ? Since the Balfour Deceleration in 1917 to date the size of the state has grown substantially and Israel can never be spoken about in isolation, because America, England, much of Europe and others stand alongside it.
Nicely summarized!
@Toticalling "right of israel to exist"? wow. Do you know how many Palestinians are crammed inside the Gaza strip and why? the arrogance of you..
Nice analysis. The last time, it was a ratio of 13:1400 for the Israeli:palestinian casualties. I was quite sure BiBi could nt push a ground offensive in the current scenario. What is worrying though is the trend in Israeli opinion wanting to continue war mongering after all they have done to Palestine in the last 50 years. So yes, after Hezbollah, its another great defeat for Israel on another front. We cant expect anything nice from the Saudis but its encouraging to see that Arab awakening has brought so much force for the public opinion in many other Arab countries. Iran also came out a winner again, considering Hezbollah and Hamas both have defeated the wills of Israeli war mongers. And of course they ended up selling/advertising a lot of their weapons. The next logical step is the resolution later this month in United Nations for the acceptance of Palestinian statehood which now looks like will be a win for Palestine too. yes, it looks like winter has just arrived in Tel Aviv. one for the Arab Spring.
Certainly a far cry from strategic point of view. A mention of Hezbollah instead could make this statement plausible. Striking at Hezbollah, however, was not the objective of Gaza offensive.

The bottom line is that Gazans can now enter Egypt and use Israel to go to meet other part of Palestine. It is too early to talk of losers and winners. Hamas must accept the right of Israel to exist and Israel must make concessions.
