Suspected TTP militant among 12 arrested in city

Police also nab suspects involved in stealing Rs1 million from a private company’s vehicle.

KARACHI: The Crime Investigation Department’s Anti-Extremist Cell (AEC) disclosed on Tuesday that it had arrested an alleged member of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Akhtar Mehsud a few days ago.

The alleged militant was nabbed after intelligence officials raided Kunwari Colony in Manghopir, and he was then shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation.

Mehsud reportedly told officials that suicide bombers have been dispatched to wreak havoc during Muharram.

AEC chief SSP Chaudhry Aslam said that Mehsud was instrumental in strengthening the TTP network in Karachi, and was also involved in generating funds for the militant organisation.

He also reportedly had close links with TTP’s chief for Manghopir and surrounding areas, Sher Zaman Mehsud. Aslam added that further investigation was underway.

12 suspects arrested

The Special Investigation Unit claimed that it arrested four men who were allegedly involved in stealing Rs1 million from the vehicle of a private company in Korangi Industrial Area. Law enforcers nabbed Fahim, Nasir Siddiqui, Iftikhar and Amir and also seized weapons from them. They were also allegedly involved in other cases of street crime.

Police apprehended another four suspects during separate raids in North Nazimabad.

They were identified as Samiullah, Farooq, Wahid and Munawar and police added that it seized three TT pistols and stolen cell phones from them. Officials said that the accused were involved in street crime and were also known for using toy pistols to snatch jewelry and other belongings from women.  Rangers reportedly nabbed four suspects, including two alleged members of a banned organisation, from Gulbahar. Officials said that Farhan and Adnan belonged to a banned outfit and were arrested during a targeted raid in the area.
