Muharram processions: 8,000 police officials to be deployed in Pindi

Lady police will also be deployed with the mourning processions and Majalis

Around 8,000 police personnel will be deployed in Rawalpindi District to ensure security during Muharram. Leaves for all police officials have been cancelled between Muharram 1 and Muharram 10. The security plan was finalised in a meeting held here on Tuesday.


According to a Rawalpindi police spokesman, religious leaders and scholars of different sects have also been taken on board to promote religious harmony. There will be 1,916 Majalis and 447 Muharram processions in the district. Additional Special Branch police, Elite Force, Punjab Constabulary, lady police and Rangers along with district police officials will be deployed.

Strict checking of vehicles would also be made at entry and exist points of Rawalpindi city. There would be strict monitoring of all processions while CCTV cameras will also be installed to ensure security. Parking of vehicles will not be allowed within 200 yards of Imambarghs.

No one would be allowed to stand on rooftops of commercial or residential buildings situated along the routes of the main mourning processions, while armed police personnel would be deployed on some rooftops. Police patrolling would also be enhanced during Muharram. Members of mohalla peace committees along with female volunteers of civil defence and lady police would also be deployed with the mourning processions and Majalis.
