Bangladesh prime minister shuns Pakistan summit invitation
"The prime minister is not going to attend the summit," Syed Masud Khundoker, a director-general in Bangladesh's foreign ministry, told AFP.
An official in Hasina's office, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the prime minister would not be joining the eight-nation summit on November 22, and said Foreign Minister Dipu Moni would instead represent Bangladesh.
Neither official explained Hasina's decision not to attend.
Pakistan's Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani had issued the invitation to Hasina in person last Friday on a rare visit to Bangladesh by a senior Pakistani.
Relations between the two sides remain extremely delicate with Moni asking Rabbani last week for Pakistan to apologise for war crimes committed by the army. Hasina's government says up to three million people were killed in the conflict.
The Daily Star, a Dhaka-based newspaper, said that policy advisers had told Hasina that it would be unwise to visit Pakistan unless Islamabad offered a formal apology to Dhaka for what it regards as a "genocide".
Ties have been particularly strained since Hasina's Awami League party came to power in 2009.
However Hasina did visit Pakistan in 1999 in her first stint in office, in a bid to ease escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
The summit of the D-8 group of developing nations in Islamabad is due to include representatives from six other nations, including Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria and Turkey.
The meeting begins on November 19 with leaders due to attend its finale on November 22.

Yes Bengalis are much more enlightened lot and progressive. They hate dogma and sectarian approach towards life. I firmly beleive they are much better Muslims then an average.

Most of the people are always denying the facts that the world accepts. Pakistan even after 42 years refuses to accept the fact that it was the politics of leaders of Pakistan that pushed the people and politicians of Bangladesh out of Pakistan. In the General Elections of 1970, Shaikh Mujibur Rehman's Awami League Party won absolute majority (160 out of 300 seats) and should have been sworn in as PM of Pakistan. But swollen-headed Bhutto couldn't accept a Bengali as a PM as probably he had superiority complex in favour of Western Pakistanis like Punjabis and Sindhis as against Bengalis. That is how he twisted Yahya's arm by throwing temper tantrums. The rest in history! So primarily, the ego of Western Pakistanis caused their nation to split. That's the product of a perverted logic. Islam is not a glue and because your are the "land of the pure", it does not mean that other Muslim nations should toe your line (which is usually a destructive one). I don't think you and your fellow readers would dare raise your voice against the Saudis or Iranians refusing to visit your country. What can you do if some foreign leader finds it not expedient to visit your country? What has this to do with Hindus or Jews or Muslims? It is pure and simple expedience. Bangladesh is irrelevant. It's not an official invitation by Pak Gov. its a G8 summit which Pak happens to be hosting. Bangla can't even take an honorable stance on the Rohingya (very much like Bengalis) that are being killed at tis very moment. Hassina's government is gutless. She hasn't even spoken out in support for her countrymen being harassed and murdered in Assam. She should ask for apologies all around it seems cause Bengalis are at the receiving end everywhere (except Pakistan) - at the moment it seems that Indians (Assamese) and Burmese are killing her kith and kin but she doesn't have the spine to ask them stop killing or protect her people let alone an apology. There is a common saying "known enemy is much better than unknown one" . Bangladeshis helped dividing the country , but later when Pakistani leaders rejected Bengali's mother tongue which is much more rich and ancient than Paki's language, then Bengalis realized the religion trap .Later These very same Bengalis picked up national anthem written by Tagore .I personally believe it was Bengalis destiny , sorry if it hurts someone . So better keep a distance from pakistan and continue developing the country stay away from radicals and extremists which is a common thing in Islamic world.

The Indian name comes from River Indus that flows in current day Pakistan and the civilization of Indus Valley. The earliest known civilization from the subcontinent started from Bolan area of Balochistan, Pakistan who settled down around Indus river later on and thus giving this area the name of India. There are two facts that cannot be ignored when one is talking about history of the region, There are dozens of different ethnic and linguistic groups in the area who are independent from each other and they were ruled by their own leaders in different independent states at different points in the history. Some people think every one else belong to current Indian state and were always like that which is wrong.

Unfortunately, Pakistan has not got the point correct. Bangladesh would have forgotten the massacre of its Bangladeshis had Pakistan corrected itself after the creation of Bangladesh. ISI, JI, LeT, JuD and many such organizations started to promote religious extremism and terror activities in Bangladesh. Bangladeshis are literate and even their woman are very entrepreneurial. They resent Pakistan's activities in promoting terror and trying to make Bangladesh an intolerant country with extremist mindset. This is the same thing that is happening in Afghanistan also. Pakistan can never have good relations with any country, be they muslim or non-muslim country, until they disband all terror groups within Pakistan and stop using religion to justify anything and everything bad and vice. Few months ago, I wrote in another comment that I have heard of a Bangladeshi family where they have Muslim, Hindu and Christian son-in laws, all in one family, and none have changed their religion or name. Pakistanis, unfortunately can never understand. They shall still try to conquer everyone else through terror activities. They are proud to loose 45,000 lives and incur $80 billion cost to their economy just to protect OBL and other terror groups. Yet Pakistan shall keep blaming others for all their problems. Pakistan's relationship with Bangladesh foretells their future relationship with Afghanistan. But, Pakistanis will still live in their own dream world of tribal unity (Pashtun unity) or one religion even when there is so much hatred amongst different sects of the same religion.

Pakistani awaam are not idiots. I have not lived a long time and definitely not since birth in Pakistan- but even I can vouch that it is easy to brainwash an illiterate person anywhere in the world, not just Pakistan. But it is highly impossible to brainwash a logical Pakistani (they do not have to be educated for that- just a bit of common sense required).

I think she should get a reality check. No one cares about her or what she wants, not even a major portion of her own people. If I remember correctly her own family was killed by her own people (army), even the dog and the parrot - and had nothing to do with Pakistan, ISI or India or anyone else. She survived because she was out of country - should Pakistan apologize for that too? Most of the 3 million people killed were punjabis and non-bengalis and were killed by mukti bahni.

After very carefully going through all the comments I sincerely feel that most of the people in Pakistan are not fully aware of the happenings leading to creation of Bangladesh. May be that the people have been deliberately miss led and kept away from the truth Or the truth has been buried deep in the maze of propaganda/ hysteria. Another win for India and loss to Pakistan on diplomatic front. We have lost our so called twin brother Afghanistan on west border and they are now shelling on us as a note of thanks for what we have done for them in the last 25 years keeping millions of refuge and many of them now given (legal / illegal) nationality. Things not going great for Pakistan with nuts heading state of affairs. Not much comments for BD as they should worry abt millions living in bad state than accepting every order from the bosses sitting in Dehli. Exports going up slightly and Takka gaining some value does not make any difference unless effect trikle downs to poor. No complains to India, they are doing what a sensible gov should do to protect its own interest.

It seems Sheikh Hasina has put her personal preference before Bangladesh's. It is in interest of both people to move forward and her visit would have encouraged the Govt. of Pakistan to think seriously about the apology.
I lost quite a large number of relatives and friends in then East Pakistan now Bangladesh. In most cases they were hacked to death by the Bengalis, and some by the Indian forces attack, helped and supported by Bengalis. My family never received an apology from the Bangladeshi govt or Hasina begum. Should this apology not be a two way process. And if she thinks that Pakistan need to apologise than why did she and her forces brutally put down the revolt in her own tenure as President and than tried a whole lot of people as traitors. Double standards. One for me and other for those I don't get on with.

The series of comments shows that chauvinist in our country have not learnt any lessons. Our countrymen committed crimes amounting to genocide and still angry on victims. This indicates Other nationalities in Pakistan have to go through same genocide before they get their rights in Pakistan.
Bangladesh should be careful. Something like this could trigger the GHQ driven foreign policy of Pakistan to unleash its "non-state-actors" (read terrorists) like it has done on the rest of the world.

They need to apologize for what the Mukti Bahini did with the Pakistani's and the Bihari's. It would be better that both nations issue simultaneous statements condemning the in-human acts committed in 1971.
