I was born and raised in a country where it was rare to be asked your religion or about your religious practices. I attended a convent school where the nuns ensured that there was no way to tell whether a girl student was from a rich or poorer household. Our uniforms were strictly enforced and no jewellery or expensive shoes were allowed.
Some scholars say that what started, very soon after the death of the Quaid-e-Azam, was the use of Islam as a political tool and was later militarised and mainstreamed by Dictator Ziaul Haq, which has now become the tyrannising force in all aspects of daily life in Pakistan.
Today, regardless of whether one is Sunni, Shia, Ahmadi, Christian, Hindu or Parsi, he sends his children to school worried, every day. People are careful at workplaces about sharing their personal beliefs. Since 1989, 4,051 people have been killed in 2,800 incidents of sectarian terrorism up until October 2012, according to the South Asia Terrorism Portal database. Most of those were targeted killings.
The majority of Pakistanis may not subscribe to it but a national psyche of fear that has been mainstreamed into every aspect of our lives has become almost overwhelming. We are constantly fed conspiracy theories so that we fear foreign powers or the beliefs of others. It is as if our sect, our ethnic group, our nation or our religion is constantly under attack and we must fear and attack the ‘other’ before being attacked ourselves. The fight to regain control of our lives is on. Whether it is the establishment or the Sipah-e-Sahaba, the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi or the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, there is a constant source of violence in our midst. Our lives are no longer ours to live.
The manifestations of the rising violence and the accompanying fear it generates are many: the rise in incidents of blasphemy cases; the violent and sometimes armed mobs that mysteriously appear outside a school in Lahore over a teacher’s alleged blasphemy; the threats against young Rimsha Masih; the killing of Ahmadis with impunity all over Pakistan; the targeted killing of Shias from Karachi to Quetta to Parachinar and Dera Ismail Khan in what is becoming a virtual genocide. The attackers are almost never apprehended. Even if the state manages to arrest the perpetrators, they are out on bail before you know it and yet, those accused of blasphemy or murdered for simply being Shia receive no justice.
As a child and later as a teenager, Sunni friends would occasionally attend majlises with us during Muharram. Today, when I go to an imambargah in Karachi, police trucks, metal detectors and youth guards serve as a reminder of the looming threats.
The deafening silence of the political class over the killing of Salmaan Taseer should have been a wakeup call that mobilised the nation but where were the leaders?
Chairman of the PPP, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, was the only politician who publicly condemned Governor Taseer’s murder and in the case of Malala Yousufzai, again it was only Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and MQM leader Altaf Hussain and his party that spoke out strongly.
What is the answer then? Do we continue to be killed or intimidated into silence? No. It is time to hold our leadership accountable. As every Pakistani knows, the civilian government is easy to blame. But, until the military and intelligence services round up, disarm and put away the terrorists and the courts comply and refuse them bail, things will not change.

Pakistan has increasingly become a place where you're defined/judged by- firstly,by your religious creed, and secondly by which political party you support! Funnily enough, this article is clear example.
@Rajesh Kumar: Again not true, uncle sam gave it all the money, training and weapons that it could to resist the soviets, otherwise could a child defeat a superpower of its time?. If you think thats the way of bringing up a child then I don't want to know more!.
@M Baloch You seem to be an advocate of Ms Isphahani, arguing a lost case. Her own & her husband's patriotism is proven in the Court and known to all. She has taken "oath" of US citizenship so has her husband. They come to Pakistan like vultures, suck our blood, fill up their coffers and then fly away to the country of their "oath" when PPP rule is over.
I agree that we must put fullstop on this religious extreemism but as someone pointed out
It is so unfortunate for the country that liars (she lied about her dual nationality) are preaching morality !!!
moreover the article is Pro-PPP and it seems the writer goal is to make Zardari happy
@Kamran Naqvi: Her husband is not in Pakistan because the army has a tradition of killing anyone who opposes them. Don't forget she belongs to a family of diehard Pakistani nationalists who were kicked out because their version of nationalism didn't agree with what the army wanted.
@Kamran Naqvi Why every one else is guilty but Arslan ? "Steve Arsalan is innocent till proven guilty. But….. Asif Zardari is guilty till proven innocent."
Many of the comments have attacked the writer on personal score and also on the doings of her past leadership. Some comments have been sarcastic and some have made fun of the matter.Whatever we may say the truth is that this article is a fair and frank analysis of the present day situation in Pakistan. What has been stated is truth. Yes today there is a psyche of fear gripping the entire country. There is naked and arrogant dance of death and hatred. Let us understand the serious problem raised by the writer and look for solutions.
Are'nt you the same ex lawmaker who "forgot" to declare her dual nationality to become a legislator? What credibility do you have to dispense wisdom on national affairs now?
Fear is looming because ruling class is unable to deliver.virus flourish in a weak body.
"Ammm we never sowed the seeds of terrorism, that was uncle sam’s mischeif when they wanted to destroy the Soviet Union. I guess uncle sam deserves it to right?." - True, but you have nurtured it very well from a 3-4 year old baby to a well fed and very well nourished young man.
The Indian subcontinent is ushering towards a new era of bilateral relationships and the pioneers are off course The Islamic Republic of Pakistan and The Republic of India. @Umer: Do not assume things. Despite the fact that in recent years, monster of extremism has infiltrated from KP and Punjab to Sindh as well. But Sindh is historically different in terms of inter religious harmony. The great Raja Dahir protected Muslims from Ummayad terrorists, then there has been inter-religious marriages throughout the history. Even today you find Shia-Sunni marriages a quite common phenomenon, can you people think about that in KP or Punjab? And No, Shahnawaz didn't forcefully married Hindu woman, there were family ties between Bhuttos and local Hindus.
I stopped reading the article when I saw "Media Adviser to the PPP Co-Chairman"
Regardless of whom she is. She has spoken my mind minus the Bhutto’s being the only saviours of the country.
It is time for us to stand against up against the secretarianism and terrorism spreading fear in our country
We can say it will take a generation to right the wrongs of the past but to right the wrongs, however long it takes will need proactive efforts rather than passive consent.
Which country of you are talking about? USA or Pakistan?
Great analysis...
@observer Yes i would vote for it. It will take another generation to undo the damage done by the legacies of Bhuttos, Sharifs, Generals and mullahs .at least one generation.
@indian: Ammm we never sowed the seeds of terrorism, that was uncle sam's mischeif when they wanted to destroy the Soviet Union. I guess uncle sam deserves it to right?.
@faraz: You think that place was/is a tolerant place?
Lady, its happening in Sectarian Pakistan. PPP is Not a Religious Party.
@kanwal:
OK, now that we have established what is wrong and why, how about undoing it?
Will you vote for Abolition of Ahmadia amendment and the Blasphemy Laws? Speak up please.
Fantastic article based on truth & facts but unfortunately we are so blinded by hate, anger & revenge that we cannot see reasoning, facts & logic. Disaster is just few yards away waiting for us but nobody is worried or concerned. We will continue calling it RAW+MOSSAD+CIA Conspiracy to dislodge Pakistan. her husband Hussain H was a extremely outstanding Pakistani ambassador to US but unfortunately establishment from day one did not liked his enlightened views. Wake up since World has become a global village.
Chairman of the PPP, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, was the only politician who publicly condemned Governor Taseer’s murder and in the case of Malala Yousufzai
It is because he doesn't live in Pakistan
Sabi, Bhutto was a great leader. The Quaid knew that Islam and democracy and socialism were all compatible but it was Bhutto who brought Islamic democracy and socialism to reality. In Bhutto's time Pakistan became the leader of the Ummah and played very important international role. International Islamic Universities where students could be exposed to cutting edge knowledge were established. Because of the pioneering works of Bhutto, Zia was able to carry the tradition forward.
@sabi: "@gp65: You deserve honorary citizenship of Pakisan but of course not in present situation.(hehe)"
What a charing compliment. Thank you for your kindness.
@mirza I agree. In India too we have to choose the best among two not so great options.
Great, just what we needed, a morality lesson from F. Ispahani.
Make the Islamic interpretations loud and clear verse by verse - so that Islam can not be misused.
‘I was born and raised in a country where it was rare to be asked your religion or about your religious practices.’ Unless you were Ahmedi.
@M Baloch:
There are allegations that Bhutto's dad Sir Shahnawaz forcefully married that Hindu lady.
@gp65: Sorry about the typo. Read FATA as FATF
@M Baloch You can say whatever you like about how progressive the PPP leaders have been. But the reality stays the same. Your bosses learnt a lot from their foreign masters. You cant even pick the contradictions in your own defense. I love how you guys are taken to bits in this age of internet. Pls go and get a life. I know a lot about the convenient set ups your dear Bhutto clan has been making, right and left. There is a reason we the people are promptly eating grass and they the leaders own an atom bomb, lot of strategic assets and foreign bank accounts. Not to mention a whole breed of Bhutto brats to make sure we stay the slaves.
as u sow so shall u reap.........u r responsible for what is happening in ur country........u sowed the seeds of terrorism against us....now u r facing it.........u deserve it........no mercy.
@gp65: You deserve honorary citizenship of Pakisan but of course not in present situation.(hehe) Well said agreed 100%.
@gp65: Thanks and I agree with you. However, in democracy we choose the bad among worse we do not have ideal candidates. I have never said that PPP/ANP or MQM are perfect. On the contrary they consist of the same Pakistanis. However, that is the only secular (to use the term loosely) choice the voters have in various parts of Pakistan. Cheers, M

All the things that you have suggested are necessary and are part of fire fighting operation. The fire prevention aspect got totally missed out - change the hateful textbooks that promote shahadat - implement existing laws on hate speech be it in rallies of DPC, be it in the wahabi madrassas or even some TV channels - stop lying to your people and continuing to create the bogeyman of India (and yes this has continued during Zardari's term also despite all superficial words to the contrary for e.g. false information about supposedly 40 Indian consulates in Afghanistan when simple google search will tell you there are just 5 and in exact same cities as Pakistan, lies that India is stealing Pakistan's water when India has honoured the IWT even through war times, lies by Rehman Malik that TTP are Indian stooges) - stop distinguishing between good terrorists and bad terrorists - implement the FATA that Pakistan has signed for and stop terrorist groups like LeJ, JeM, LeT openly raising funds.
@Mirzaji,
Everything you have said is 100% true but I think the present PPP government also has contributed to the current situation where they have abandoned even a pretense to govern and establish law and order.
Author I agree with you but this article would have been more powerfull had you mentioned the one who started this mess for his politicle goals, he could never achieved. The way this man backstabed his politicle mentors to get to power, same way he was backstabed by a person whom he trusted most. And I mean ZAB and Zia who hanged him.(taqdeer ka tmasha.
@Kamran Naqvi: She never lied about her nationality and spoke truth. But how do you twist the issue of mass murders with personal attacks on the author and criticise others for standing for moral values! @kanwal: Kanwal BB Let me enlighten you: Do you really think that ZAB was interested in persecution of any community or declaring them KAFIR? If you are starter let me tell you ZAB's own mother was a Hindu. These were Moudodi, Mufi Mehmood & Noorani people who pushed ZAB to the extent where he was either to choose his life/govt or declare Ahmadis NON-MUSLIMS. He couldn't stand the pressure and did a wrong thing but even after doing that he is reportedly stated that he would reverse the law in few years.
Regarding BB's support of Taliban, I think you need some basic lessons about who runs country's security and foreign policy and how much BB would have like the idea. Now I don't want to tell you that she herself couldn't try ZAB & Murtza's killer because she was not interested in the affairs but she knew very well the mind set who occupies power epicentre and they used to say "AURAT K BAITHNAI SE KURSI NAJS HO JAATI HAI" (when a female sits on a chair it become filthy and impure), so you really think they could do something else than what they did in their tenures?

Look who is talking!
A Sunni friend of mine mad an innocent comment about disagreeing about some minor practice in Hanafi vs Hanbali practice and he was accused of being a blasphemer. This the problem we have we can cannot voice anything without drawing fire from someone.
No worries - this is all for Kashmir!
A great thought provoking Op Ed by the ET. However, the naysayers would miss the whole point and problem of terrorism which is the biggest problem in Pakistan. Our forefathers have been mixing water in milk, and making fake drugs with the increasing corruption. However, we were safe prior to 1980 in Pakistan. The corruption is in many third world countries of the world but here in Pakistan we are talking about living in fear, praying in fear, going to school and work in fear and there is no hope of religion based killings to stop. The author may be elite, worst person in the world but the problem remains and we cannot close our eyes because we hate to hear the truth.
The writer has simply shared her views, ideas and feelings which might be altogether subjective but the reaction over her article is somewhat like blaming her for having these views. perhaps the readers want the writer should assess the general mood and opinion of her would be readers and then according to their wishes she should express her opinion. The question is why we have become so suspicious about each other , why we are so convinced that we are always right and whom once we have declared wrong, has no right to say any thing about this country.
Wow, these PPP associated writers would connect everything to the 'shaheed' benazir bhutto. Bhutto is responsible for splitting Pakistan into two. Now the rest of his Party is doing its best to split it into further parts. Balochistan is being run by completely corrupt politicians. Karachi is getting out of the control with the daily mass murders. Corruption is at its peak. Yet these guys are still preaching how their 'sacrifices' are making pakistan a great country.
Please leave us and Pakistan alone. We need a capable government and leadership that isn't corrupt and can actually do something positive.
Pakistanis will be victims of terrorism and fear as long as we have people in governnance and law-enforcment that came there on parchi system. A dishonest corrupt man will never arrest his criminal friends.
Correction: born before partition?
'I was born and raised in a country where it was rare to be asked your religion or about your religious practices.'
Were you before partition?
A great piece...Hats off to you Miss Ispahani..Judiciary, Administration, intellectuals and political parties have been silent on the ongoing massacres of Shia community, there was some hope from parliament. When you were in the parliament, you were among quite few who repeatedly spoke against the monster of terrorism and Shia genocide. Unfortunately after your suspension there is complete silence in the parliament.
C'mon get over it. We have an issue of extremism and history of military interventions but nobody from the military asked your government to be corrupt to the core, no religious conservatives prevented your govt. to resolve energy issues, nobody asked you to keep playing politics over economy. It's time you stop hiding behind the past and try to do something constructive for a change.
Dear all, so sorry for the horrible spelling errors in my previous post. Learning to use my mobile's keypad with one hand and failed so far it seems.
@ author So you felt the escalation of mindset of hate from the day Bhutto was assassinated? That just goes on to show the class you and your hubby dear belong to: the corrupt ruling elite. Let me enlighten you Ma'm: it was your ex-boss's father who passed the infous law marking Ahmadis for life time persecution in this country. It was your shaheed ex boss who considered taliban as stratetigic assets at one point. And it is your current boss who is utterly failibg in establishing law and order despite having been in government for 4 yrs. STOP PLAYING POLOTICS USONG DEAD BODIES OF BHUTTOS. and pls go back to USA.
It is so unfortunate for the country that liars (she lied about her dual nationality) are preaching morality !!! Where is her husband hiding from Memo Proceedings these days???
