Dr Chishti, 80, arrived in Ajmer city accompanied by his wife Mehrunissa and son Tariq, according to the BBC report.
The Indian Supreme Court had permitted Dr Chishti to return to Pakistan on “compassionate grounds” but on the condition that he would return to Indian custody on November 1, so it can hear his appeal against conviction in a murder case on November 20.
After a prolonged trial that has stretched for almost 18 years, Dr Chishti was found guilty in a murder case and was awarded a life sentence on January 31 last year by a sessions court in Ajmer. The time he spent in jail while being tried was not considered to be included in his sentencing.
Dr Chishti was sentenced for killing a man during a brawl in Ajmer in April 1992. He was on a pilgrimage to the shrine of famous Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. He has not been allowed to travel back to Pakistan till this year.

@Bashir: I think our media has not shared real truth. He was in fact in jail for 14 months only, altough the court trial lasted for long 18-years. He was even allowed to go home in May on humanitarian grounds for six months and he returned to India in November with his wife Mehrunissa and son Tariq.
I found out for myself from BBC news

@Blithe: I am curious to know did Sarabjit kill anyone or just a foolish Indian spy? if not we could possibly release him as our good gesture, as I am sure he will never dare enter Pakistan again so he is not a real threat to us..
He already has gone imprisonment for 20 years. Keeping in view his old age and also keeping his promise to return to india, the court will convert his under trial imprisonment into sentece and release him. This is what i can visualize
Get over it, he is a senile old man. Let him go and spend time with his people in the last years of his life. He may have been guilty of a crime committed in passion, but he is 90 and been rotting in our jails for over 20 years.
@Enlightened: Chisti yes,. Saranjet , no.
Sarabjet was a terrorist . Chisti was involved in a brawl that ended badly .
There is a difference .
"The time he spent in jail while being tried was not considered to be included in his sentencing."
Indian Supreme Court has clarified that sentence of Life Imprisionment is imprisonment for life.
"He has not been allowed to travel back to Pakistan till this year."
Like you permitted Raymond Davis to go.
The professor has committed a crime and he has to accept the punishmnet.
Hope Dr Chishti and Sarabjit return back to their respective countries as both have spent around 20 years in jail.
Wah!! He killed a man on his pilgrimage in a foreign country ?? Was he really on Pilgrimage or on a suicidal mission ? Again He is a professor ?This man needs severe punishment.
