The North Waziristan operation it seems has been shelved for the time being. There are elections, votes to be lost and potential extensions to be considered, however, one suspects a primary reason is that no one wants to come across as a warmonger. Wars as everyone knows are evil. I am sure that most people cannot really believe that. There are “just” wars and “right” wars. The only exception can be an absolute pacifist. Although in the case of the Taliban, it is mostly selective pacifists. George Orwell wrote: “Pacifism is objectively pro-Fascist. This is elementary common sense. If you hamper the war effort of one side you automatically help that of the other. Nor is there any real way of remaining outside such a war as the present one.” The use of force is not always immoral or illegal; in fact there are situations where the non-use of force is inarguably immoral. Either we choose the time for a showdown or they certainly will. I hope the anti-imperialist, pacifists would respond differently in a hypothetical clear case of genocide, but you never know.
We should not fight our own people. What sort of silliness is this? Never mind the foreigners in Waziristan, states use force against their own people when they start murdering innocent civilians. Then there is why don’t you go and fight, if you feel so convinced. If this inane argument is accepted, then doctors who feel that the law and order situation needs to improve should instead quit their jobs and become vigilantes, or else have no opinion on the matter. This argument also prohibits women, senior citizens and physically disabled, etc. from having an opinion on national security. You know because they are not allowed on the war front. In theory, we have the idea of civilian supremacy over the army. We have specialised armed forces which have signed up for this task and are paid for this. We can and should support them in this war, and do not need to bear arms for doing that.
The list continues with, if we take them head on, they will be provoked and attack with greater zeal. They do not look unprovoked or lacking in zeal right now. Then there are more sinister apologetic arguments of peace deals and negotiations that should be buried by now. Their demands are impossible to comply with and they will still kill you. They do not want a piece of land or independence or more rights. They want the world and they want it to be their way, which requires first destroying the world. The list of excuses is too exhaustive to be dealt with here; it has two common threads; denial and fear.
The timing of the operation, the mode and the strategic modalities should be worked on for purposes of efficacy and minimising all collateral damage and a consensus built. However, there should be no doubt on who the enemy is. It is the mindset of murder on the basis of religion. I wonder, how many of the above excuses would be made if an operation was to be contemplated and carried out against the sectarian murderous organisations all over the country, which by the way should be carried out. If hopefully that day comes, we will see new excuses of how we are ignoring the complexity of the narrative and force should not be used, etc. It might be useful to distinguish between different sort of terror groups for the purposes of efficiency and strategy, for the purposes of a battle; however, it will not work for a war. We do not take them on all at the same time; however, we need to identify them all as “enemy”.
For the argument of any negotiation to be accepted, we will have to presume that the religious fanatics are rational actors. No; they are not. I assume that I might have irritated some people a bit and to “pacify” them here is an anecdote from the Dark Knight. As Batman ponders over the motivations of the Joker, his valet Alfred narrates his experience of an episode in Burma; where a bandit would raid and plunder caravans of precious stones and after the looting just throw them away. Alfred tells him, “Because some men aren’t looking for anything logical, like money. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn”. This statement of a fictional comic book character has more insight into the mindset of the Taliban and the religious fanatic than dozens of studies and theses.
We have contributed to the making of these murderers and been complicit in not fighting them earlier. However, none of this muddles a clear fact. This is our War. And we have to win it.

@Sultan:
Thank you. Now print the two posts you censored as well. Typical neo con attitude!
Any war (whoseever it was to start with ) in which you lose civillians, armed forces and police in the thousands has now become your war and the faster we realise this and come up with a plan beyond wait amd see , the better.
Saroop There is nothing for me to add on further. Thanks Excellant, regards.
@David_Smith While were mud slinging at each other over the border can i permit myself to add that the Numerous Indian Consulates in Afghanistan are there to facilitate Indian tourists visiting the various tourist attractions situated around the Pak/Afghan border, or maybe the balouch separatists decided they wanted to attend an Indian sponsored workshop on relationship management. Finally let me say the above is a response to your accusations which are not totally unfounded, however is it not time we as neighbors refrained from jumping on any opportunity to vilify each other. Right or wrong we as former Hindustan are divorced but still share a common border we share language/religions and culture, maybe we stop interfering and start supporting each other to eradicate the evil that is terrorism. God knows enough innocent people have died on both sides.
Big censorship in place on the responses to this article! So much fro freedom of speech.
With the current crop of leaders in our country I dont see anything good coming out from this govt or future govts. Media also has a role in this pathetic state of the country
@shahid: Are you dyslexic or is your cognition impaired? The writer addressed your foolish assertion in his piece before you decided to assert it.
When the American's depart in 2014 you will still be debating whether this is "our war" - the real question that you need to answer is whether it's a war you want to win or lose.
It's time for Jihad against the Taliban, because they are attacking our mosques and places of worship and civillians. And not just military action, but also through education, public denounciation. Not every man woman or child will be able to directly take up arms against the Taliban, but they CAN fight against their ideology, by protesting, condemning their actions, as brave Malala has done.
There is no question that it is our war but fighting it bring about many intractable questions. Taliban and before them Mujahideen had waged jehad in Aghanistan and we assisted them out of the way in this sacred project. Without our support neither Soviet Union would have been defeated then nor Americans now would have been humiliated. Taliban in parrticular were termed as our boys and midwifed by no less than BB. How can we attack our boys- the strategic assets- which have been trained, indoctrinated and helped financed by us. Now if they be fought just like enemies the painful question arise: who did creat them? This would bring in its wake many more intriguing questions about the judgement of those who are responsible for creating diehard enemies within. Why did we stick with policies which ultimately is bringing about civil war in Pakistan. Can we hammer out a concensus among political parties? Extremely unlikely. The fact is that this is the war Pakistan has no option but to fight it out if it has to remain at peace with itself and the world and realize its immense potential for the development and prosperity of the people of Pakistan. The sooner it is realized the better it would turn out to be for the people of Pakistan.
Had this been 'our war', the most visible would have been the preparedness for this. After being in this "whosoever's war" for more than a decade, and losing some 40,000 + civilians and soldiers, destroying the economy & infrastructure, GHQ, Mehran & Kamra violated with impunity, and all our response has been the fortifications around the 'elites' residences? Moreover, to top it all for the ordinary mortals, all we have are unmanned road blocks mushroomed everywhere, which can be kicked away without being scratched? Moreover, of course, our Interior Minister always has the prior knowledge of an attack to take place, and soon after, he even has the identities of 'wrong doers'. Great article, but this "Business of War" is going on, only for a few dollars more.
@Author:
"We contributed to the making of Taliban & been complicit in not fighting them. This is our War. And we have to win it."
The author is challenging the intelligence of every informed person with his skewed logic. His claim that Pakistan helped create TTP is as preposterous as anything could ever be. It is even more ludicrous to suggest that Pakistan is not fighting with them. However, if he meant Taliban who ruled Afghanistan for years before the US invasion on the pretense to punish Al-Qaeda, then his statement is even beyond ridiculous, because the whole world knows that Taliban operate only in Afghanistan and are not responsible for any acts of terrorism in Pakistan.
It is easy to preach war while sitting in a comfortable air-conditioned office, because you don't have to lose anything accept few moments of your leisure time - for which perhaps you are handsomely paid also - and more importantly, there is no risk of getting hurt. If it is our war, then it must also be the author's as well. Is author ready to go in the rugged mountains to fight a war with TTP terrorists, instead of just doing the lip service and expecting the others to lose their life for him and his family. The author is acting like his political leaders who themselves travel in bullet and bomb proof vehicles while leaving their workers fully exposed (recall BB's procession in Karachi in which 180 workers died - despite all the warnings she didn't call of the procession, but for herself arranged a safe cabin in the truck).
@Mir Agha: How much twisted is the mind? Baluchi are not fighting to change you.they want to live in Baluchistan as Lahories live in Lahore. They don't want to change the world. They don't want you decide for them. Remember Pakistan was never and is not one country but is federation of states. Don't equate your assets mullahs with them . You lost in Bengal because of same mentality. You butchered them but now is 2013 you will not get that free hand. Be sensible, Pakistan will progress only when all states feel that they are stake holders in it. This country is not for gunmen rule , it needs to be ruled according to will of people and will of States in it not by the will corpse commander. Be happy what u have. Don't exploit others.
@vikas: They do Vikas. You cannot generalise and put them all in one basket. A revelation that you might not be glad to know. From what I have personally experienced here; I have seen Angels living as humans. I dnt know if you got it. But a small piece of advice. Many Indians are highly mistaken about Muslims. Please tell them not to bad mouth anyone before knowing anything.
@Saad BP: It is our business when you send terrorists into our country. It is our business when you create "strategic assets" to harm us. It is our business when your text books and visual media rave and rant against us. I could go on but you should (hopefully) get the picture by now.
Fantastic article! Fully agree that it's our war & we must wipe out these monsters. Shame on them who protect them. Sadly IK you have disappointed us.
@Whats in the name: "@Author:” ....To be honest, Pakistani Army either by design or by default has never been actively involved in fighting a war. " . Actively or not we know the result of war in East Pakistan.
This is not our war. period.
@Mir Agha: they are fighting for freedom of their own land, talibans are fighting not only to rule our cities and capital but also the world.
You can win a battle or tournament or a game of sport in 2 ways. One you have to give your 100%, fight it out for a victory and hope that your will power is superior of that of the opponent. But sadly, the Pakistani Army and its people are not 100% sincere, dedicated in this, they are either half heatedly fighting or doing it just for the sake of it / international media or pressure. The other way it can be won is if the opponent is under performing, or if the opponent has sold himself for a price for a defeat.Sadly the 2nd option is not viable in a war theater. So the only available option is the first one. Rgds P
in this case war will become mine when my own personal existence comes under mortal danger..asking for unanimity is just a tactics to put onus on someone else. Pakistan has managed to create a cocktail of miseries of a gigantic proportions, which includes economical, religious, sectarian, cultural and problems in literally every walk of life.however this war is an existential crisis, which Pakistan cant afford to loose...
Terrorism is a big problem in Pakistan but radicalized mindset is an even bigger problem. Some examples: - 77 year principal of school gets denied bail due to actions of a school teacher who corrected homework but Malik Ishaq roams free. - 60 lathi wielding thugs entered a girls schools in Rawalpindi just last year because the girls were in school uniform and not in burqas. - over 600 schools are blown up - a young teenage girl who advocates rights of girls to education is shot at point blank range - Last year a teacher checking exam papers called in the police after he found blasphemous material in an answer sheet written by an Ahmadiya girl. The police wouldn't reveal the exact material because that, you know, would be blasphemous. Later it transpired that it was a case of bad spelling
People say illiteracy is the cause of rdicalization but if going to school itself becomes so dangerous as listed in examples above, what is the solution? Also there are many examples of radicalized behavior where the perpetrators were neither desperately poor or illiterate. Examples: - Lawyers throwing rose petals on Qadri - Lahore bar forbidding the sale of Shezaan juice on court premise because owner is Ahmadi - A police inspector attacking a museum curator by accusing her of fayyashi - Police destroying a worship place because it hwas dome shaped despite the fact that the worship place was constructed well before the anti-Ahmadiya laws came into existence - Maya Khan and millions of viewers thinking that a Hindu boy converting to Islam qualifies as primetime entertainment - People like Marvi Sirmed, Kamran Shafi and Asma Jahangir get shot at or receivedeath threats
There is no war until both parties declare it..the extremists always find space to grow as along as education, economic growth and employment of youth is a problem in the state. The state can only win the war against them by only giving its people a way to move away from the extremist ideas.
Lets see how many if these liberals will send their children in this war. Just like Neo-Cons of USA, these pseudo liberals are hypocrites of worst kind.
Eagerly waiting to hear the news that the author has voluntarily joined an anit-talibaan lushkar in FATA or KPK to actually participate in the combat and deal with the militants. Unless this happens writing such articles is drawing room war fighting and lap top chivalry. If it is really our war then he should be the first one to help and also bring along others who share his ideas.
The analyses of the article should be strongly endorsed. Even if the remedy is not pursued, the enemy should at least be openly acknowledged without wearing the blinkers of conspiracy theories or illogical justifications given by apologists for terrorists and their activities. But tragically that will not happen, and we will rather see a trail of disappointing comments aimed at finding fault either with the writer or putting lame justifications for the acts of terrorists and criminals. That's something much more horrific than the barbarity of terrorists. A nation blindly running towards the end of the cliff and blaming others for its problems.
@deep : the end game, according to us, is a JUST resolution to Kashmir dispute. Once done with you, we can carry on our lives pretending you don't even exist -that maps to living peacefully with you indians.
@deep: Yes we have the example of Bhutan and Maldives. Who are living peacefully with India. Why does every Indian worry about Afghanistan? The two countries don't share a border... Pakistan does not care nor ever will about what goes about in Burma or Azerbaijan. India should also limit itself to its neighbours only. Afghanis can take care of their own business very well. And here's the real end game: India should mind its own business. Indians should mind their own business.
Regards....
P.S: Indians should also drop their concept of a regional superpower. Remember the Shah of Iran? He was considered as the Police Man of this region. History sure repeats itself.
Supreme Court reportedly questioned how come 7,000 Taliban entered Karachi and then we were told of the statement from Taliban high command sounding the battle cry for Karachi! Is this a harbinger of things to come? Is the enemy shifting battle grounds and spreading their reach? Or, is the deep state raising the stakes? Question 'is this our war' can be answered with confidence by Taliban whereas those who reside in cities such as Karachi and Lahore have yet to understand the threat and its implications. We are asking the wrong question, correct question is why are we so late to react?
Its been 'our war' for several years, any signs of winning? Any objective? I'm sorry but the army has failed to wipe out the Taliban with offensives as they just move to another area.
Dear Saroop,, You got that right. Codos. " At what point does the war become “our” own?" Answer:Just about now in mine and dare I say, in world's humble opinion. ..ps
@deep: Bro if their ISI military n Mullahs could understand this there would b peace in subcontinent and even globally. India & Afghanistan would progress if our neighbour focused on its internal issues instead of playing covert war with us. And what has Pakistan gained out of this? Today Karachi also is unsafe and in a mess due to this Strategic Depth n Kashmir Obsession. Bengal was lost Now Balochistan is a Q mark
their mindset have no confusion on who the enemy is; it is everyone. They are equally clear about their demands; it is everything.<<< fits on america and allies good words though
@deep: Muslims don't know the concept of AHIMSA.
Sir, one day I was watching the Dark Knight and heard the above dialogue from Alfred (played by the legendary Michael Caine). Immediately in my mind the image of Taliban came. The bandits in Burma that Alfred is talking about I am sure, are cover up and Christopher Nolan is talking about the Taliban. Just like the Joker, the Taliban are psychotic gang of murderers who are not going to listen to any negotiation. In fact, during one of these so called "negotiations" the Taliban assassinated Badruddin Rabbani. So, I fail to understand what is Imran Khan talking about that he will negotiate with them, when they have already said that Imran is a an agent of US and his lifestyle is diametrically opposite to the kind espoused by Taliban.
Again brilliant opinion piece.
Vey well said Mr Izaz!
However, I think a very large majority of Pakistanis (who rather read Urdu press) and its military (who really calls shots) disagree with you Sir!
Aaam Aadmi on the streets of Pakistan is still sympathetic to Taliban because he hiself is already brainwahsed in school and Soldiers are sympathetic to Taliban becuase they are evn more brainwahsed in Military Academy!
Sorry, I think you are right but majority of people where you live and peole who control power, think otherwise Sir!
Absolutely this is a war Pakistan must fight against extremism and win! Blasphemy and Anti-Ahmadi laws are also part of the problem. Imran Khan wants to keep Mullahs on his side. Mullahs don't love Pakistan or Islam. They love Islamabad.
What you described also exists re: BLA/BRA. They kill innocent men, women, and children. Bomb schools and stop children from attending schools (see recent bombing and killing of women and children by BLA in Khuzdar). They also kill our servicemen. They are against the "Constitution of Pakistan". How about an operation in Balochistan to weed out Baloch terrorists? Or does that logic not compute?
One more thing - what about telling syed salahuddin not to threaten sarpanches in kashmir and let life limp to normalcy there. As long as pakistan believes it is alright to keep infiltrating mischief into india - you will never, I repeat NEVER win this war against the taliban. And that is why this article will keep getting written in english and never find any traction in the rest of pakistan - because the end game is not relinquishing the taliban philosophy or the strategic depth in afghanistan - the end game is to live peacefully with India in all senses of the word.
