The team, from Lahore College of Arts and Sciences (Lacas) bagged almost all the awards in the two-day competition except for the third best speaker trophy which was won by Cathedral and John Connon School, Mumbai.
The participating schools included La Martiniere (Kolkata), Vidyashilp (Bangalore), Scindia School (Gwalior), Vivek High (Chandigarh), The Doon School (Dehrandun), Mayo College Girls’ School (Ajmer) and Cathedral and John Connon (Mumbai).
The two teams which reached the finals were Lacas and Cathedral and John Connon.
According to India Today, the topic of the debate was that the “International Olympic Committee should ban all countries that commit human rights violations from participating in the Olympics”. The Lacas team spoke in favour of the topic while the Cathedral and John Connon team opposed it.
The three-member Lacas team also called for severing all ties with countries which were violating the basic rights of their citizens.
“The only way of showing our solidarity and expressing our disgust with such countries is to cut all ties with them. Only by isolating them completely can we create a condition that will force them to act in accordance with global human rights conventions,” Hashim Bajwa, a Class XII student of LACAS, was quoted in the report.
Umar Ali from Lacas won the second best speaker prize while Parth Jhaveri of Cathedral and John Connon School won the third best speaker award.

Congratulations winning team. We need more such progressive competition.
@maestro: The names indicate an overdose of Big Bang Theory and not any actual experience.
if human rights are violated in pakistan by drone attacks etc and other nations are keeping away, especially india, then, pakistan should realise that co-operation by neighbours will go a long way as 2 hands are better than one.The world has divided the strong neighbours and pakistan has fallen for that trap. Its high time pakistani younsters understood the Indian cause and vice versa. United we stand, divided we fall.India is powerful enough to struggle and stand, but its pakistan which has fallen badly.!!
@CallArmyinKhi: they chose it because human rights was violated by union carbide in india in the bhopal gas tragedy and the very same union carbide was sponsoring the london olympics and when india objected, the world shut up and watched and did nothing about it.This is not the first time such a thing has happened and India wants its younsters to be aware of it and condition their minds against all human rights violations.
Congratulations. Rubbish topic though. can sense why the organisers chose it.
Congratulations! :D..Proud to be a LACASIAN <3..
Aww love how our indian trolls friends are unable to accept reality of the talent we have in Pakistan. As for your "english", ever try calling Citibank customer service or ATT customer service? The call gets routed to some Sanjay sitting in a call center in mumbai who says with a pathetic accent, hello my name is steve, how can i help you please! LOLLSSI immediately say switch to urdu or hindi man and yaar apnee zubaan main baat kar, kyon mazaak kar raha angrezi kah? He laughs and says I have to speak in english sir - lmao!!
@Ammarttitude: Agreed on your points.. India is a functioning democracy & it is working towards these problems. For example,...Look at the Polio case.. India had more polio cases than any other nation in the world,As recently as 2009, India accounted for nearly half of all cases of polio, and was long considered one of the most difficult places in the world to eradicate the crippling disease. But now not a single case of the crippling disease was reported for over a year.
Why is that we are always successful outside the country and not inside?
As far as debate is concerned, interaction is important as there is deep hatred.
Pakis have a reason to cheer, thanks to their current condition , but aim for big , very big and huge . This is nothing .We don't care these achievements .Steve jobs or Bill gates was not world's youngest ms certified programmer or Salman Rushdie was not a English topper in his Mumbai school or Indian english bees in USA are not going to get booker prize like a man from Indian stae of Bihar .This needs something very extraordinary .
@Ch. Allah Daad:
Young Pakistanis have better English accent than Young Indians
That's why we see Pakistani TV anchors, eg. Javed Chaudhary pronouncing "Sanema" instead of Cinema and "Sakreen" instead of Screen, etc............LoL
@Jat - Mr Ch. Allah Daad was talking about the accent, well surely indians do have a curry English accent, we all agree to this.. And its not about the biggest English speaking nation, or about the numbers, its about the ratio of people who speak English etc like if 40% of the indians speak English, and with a total number of I.3 billion, even its 30% is more than the total population of the US..
That won't be wrong, like, if i say that india has the biggest number of poOr people in the world, or, india has the biggest number of people who've been suffering with HIV/AIDS, or, india has the biggest number of prostitutes, these are facts, which are true in both senses, both in the number and in the ratio.. :)
@Ch. Allah Daad: That is why one finds so many Pakistani news and TV anchors speaking Pakistani style American accented English...It is so funny to hear them really...Poor guys don't even know that how embarrassing they sound...Pls tell them to join any small time call center in India so that at least they get to learn proper American accent, which they think they are speaking...Ahmed Qureshi is funniest of them all btw...
haha..now all the Pakis will go crazy..how bad Indian english is , how talented Pakistanis are bla bla..
enjoy these little happiness that pakistani's can't depend on..haha
Welldone and Many many congratulatuions.. Pakistan Zindabad!
Congratulations to Lacas Team. Well done!!
chalo pakis do win sometimes.....congrats on this rare win.......!!!!!!!!!!!
@Ch. Allah Daad it was not a competition for pronunciation....particularly zero..it was a debate competition...btw Congrats to Pakistani participants..
@True Indian: Pls try and have exhibit some class. You are insulting the judges as well as the participants. @Ch. Allah Daad: Using 'J' for 'Z' is a phenomenon in the Gangetic plain, mainly Bihar and Eastern UP. However, there are unique traits exhibited by Punjabis/ Haryanvis which I have heard in Pakistani diction as well - one being the pronunciation of 'here' as 'hair'. At the same time, I would be reluctant to make that into a judgement on the English speaking skills of the entire Pak population, and wish you would return the favor.
@Ch. Allah Daad: I agree with you on this. Few analysis had been made when India was progressing rapidly in the "Call Center" business. Pakistan had a natural advantage due to their accent. It is a different story why they could not make it.
Accent varies widely within India also. For instance, in Kerala they emphasize on "O" or add "O" to an english word in their pronunciation. In Bengal they pronounce "V" like "B". An old joke goes that when a Bengali was trying to explain a word he was saying he said: It is "B" like in Bengal and not "B" (rather "V") like in Bietnam (or rather Vietnam). Similarly, Japanese mix up "R" with "L" and to them "Surprise" and "Supplies" sound the same. Not just the accent, but the body movement is also different. The Tamilians nod their head right to left and left to right. If the movement is rapid it means "No or disagree" and if the movement is slow, it means "Yes or agree". Years ago, I was with my friend from Tamil Nadu, discussing with an American. The Tamilian agreed with the American on his views and was saying "I agree" but was also nodding his head left to right. The American was observing him for some time and was confused. He finally asked the Tamilian "Is that an Yes or a No?" Others generally nod their head left and right when they disagree and up and down when they agree.
Better side win. It is winning of education.
@True Indian: Minority appeasement...........
@Ch. Allah Daad .. ha ha ha.. Started commenting just recently in public forums ? Anyways..come out of your madrassa mindset and look forward.
Funny, students from pakistan speaking in favor of boycot of countries violating human rights. Too funny. They want to Boycot their own country?
This award means nothing if not followed by deeds.
@Ch. Allah Daad: What nonsense ! Thought you were one of the mature Pakistanis. The children did well, congratulate them and be done with it. Do you know the size and extant of India and how many countless dialects and accents there are ? Or have you suddenly become an expert on phonetics for all of India ? To help you with your knowledge - India is 5 times the size of United States and has the largest number of English speaking youngsters in the whole world.
Just celebrate the wonderful showing by your children and don't involve extraneous issues in to it.
Sort of hard to miss the irony of the debating positions held by the two teams... Congrats to the Pakistani team nevertheless.
Well done; good going !!
Congrats! Keep it up guys.....
WELLDONE GUYS.CONGRATS.
Congratulations...Young Pakistanis have better English accent than Young Indians. Thanks to Urdu language which has a very accurate sound for Z. Young Indians would speak Jeero, instead of Zero. It was not a problem in older Indian generation. We can see the difference in older and new Indian movies.
am feeling so proud to be a student of LACAS.. Alhumdolilah
Why is it important to oblige the Pakistani artist or students with winners trophy even if they suck...
Congratulations to the young talented team from Pakistan for bagging the top prizes in the prestigious competition arranged by India Today group which is a leading magazine in India. Unfortunately, education is allotted a low budget in Pakistan and this trend needs to be reversed to provide access to education to the lower strata of the society as well.
Cheeeetay!! :D
Great. Keep it up :)
