Fool’s Gold: Replica coins stolen from museum

Three robbers who broke into a museum in Umerkot, probably never heard the saying ‘all that glitters is not gold’.

HYDERABAD:

Three robbers who broke into a museum in Umerkot on Friday probably never heard the saying ‘all that glitters is not gold’.

They stole several hundred gold-coloured clay replicas of historic coins dating back to the Mughal era, but did not bother with the real antiques consisting of silver jewellery, swords, daggers, guns, books and idols worshipped by followers of Jainism and Hinduism.

“Three armed robbers barged in and took us hostage,” said a clerk named Gul Hassan. “They took away more than 300 coins but did not touch anything else.”

Two other employees of the museum, guards Islamuddin and Chuni Lal, were also reportedly present at the scene. Umerkot’s SHO Auranzeb Sufi said a case will be registered after the museum’s curator Irshad Ali, who is not yet back from Eid holidays, returns from his vacation. Sufi confirmed only the coins were stolen.
