Doctors protest against warrants

PIMA demands that the cases and warrants against doctors be withdrawn immediately.

KARACHI: Doctors, nurses, paramedical staff and students from Civil Hospital Karachi and Dow University of Health Sciences protested on Thursday against the arrest warrants that have been issued to a medical superintendent and other doctors.

The warrants were issued following the death of a patient in March. The president of Sindh Doctors’ Welfare Association, Dr Ghulam Mujtaba Memon, the nursing superintendent, Nasreen Gill and the principal of Dow Medical College, Dr M Umer Farooq, spoke at the occasion.

The patient died in the civil hospital’s medical ward inspite of being given proper treatment, they said. Her relatives filed an FIR against the doctors on duty.

The Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA) has also condemned the act of issuing arrest warrants against doctors and has demanded that the cases should be withdrawn immediately. PIMA spokesperson said that the case was five months old and enquiries had revealed that the doctors were innocent.
