Pawnay 14 august: Play ends strong run

ISLAMABAD: Pawnay 14 August, a play that managed to take the sleepy city by storm, will conclude here on Monday (today). Dawar Mehmood, the director who came back to the capital after two years, was overwhelmed by the response received from people. “We were completely taken aback by the response. Nine shows were already fully booked before the play started.  Every day we have been performing to a packed theatre,” he said. The play, now popularly known as “Quaid and Pakistan’s play”, showcases the three key players for the creation of Pakistan, Jinnah, Allama Iqbal and Maulana Shaukat Ali coming back to Pakistan only to face disappointment and despair when no one in the country is able to recognise their own founding leaders.  In Islamabad, many that seemed apprehensive over paying Rs1,500 seemed to have gotten their money’s worth.

I watched it in Karachi on 11th November with my wife. It was worth every Rupee we had spend on it. I want to quote somebody " We cried & laughed at the same time ". Never before I have seen such mastery in a Pakistani performing arts show. Politicians will evolve hopefully with the democratic process but can we say the same thing about the military establishment. The discussion between the Colonel, Jinnah & Iqbal leaves some serious questions if the military mindset is ever going to change.

What a brilliant play. Exposes the entire civil and military leadership, takes a swipe at the self proclaimed new anchors.
