GUJRANWALA:

A man, identifying himself as private secretary to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, had deprived a businessmen of Rs900,000.

The complaint was filed by Iftikhar Iqbal, a resident of Wapda Town, who said, he had rented out a portion of his house to Arshad Janjua in April 2012 for Rs25,000 per month. He said Janjua had introduced himself as private secretary to the former prime minister of Pakistan.

A month later, he said, Janjua and his friends, Afzal, Ashraf and Alim Din, who often visited the house, offered him a partnership in business. He said for this, he gave them Rs600,000.

He said Janjua stayed at the house for six months, but never paid the rent (Rs150,000), or gas and electricity bills (Rs200,000).

He said Janjua had taken a copy of his national identity card, but had instead used it to obtain a stay order from a court against potential disconnect of gas supply by the Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL). Iqbal said he later came to know about this through a friend, who had contacts in the SNGPL.

He said Janjua had asked him for more money but he was never given away details of the business they were in.

Last week, he said, he had asked Janjua to return the money and warned him he would take the matter to the police otherwise. He said the next morning, he found that Janjua had left without notice. He said he tried to contact Januja’s friends, but their mobile phones were not responding. Iqbal has now requested the CPO to take action against the fraud and set up a police team to search for him and his friends.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Iqbal said, he had filed a complaint with the Saddar police, but there had been no action so far. He said if police did not catch the culprits, they will continue to fool innocent citizens.
