LAHORE:

Ali Imran Yousaf, son-in-law of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, was sent to jail on Thursday, on a 14-day judicial remand in connection with the bakery torture case.

Defence-B police took Yousaf under custody when he appeared before them for his arrest. The police booked Yousaf under section 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The police presented Yousaf before a magistrate of the Cantonment Courts on Thursday, and requested that the accused be sent on a judicial remand, adding that physical custody was not required.

The investigating officer, in a report, stated that Yousaf ordered his security guard and elite force officials to assault Irfan, an employee of a Lahore bakery, after he refused to deliver a cake to a female customer, who was allegedly Yousaf’s wife.

The magistrate issued a notice to the police on a bail petition filed by Yousaf through Advocate Rana Asadullah Khan.

Khan argued that the police had summoned his client to the police station to record a statement. However, they arrested him with mala fide intent.  He further argued that the accused was not nominated in the FIR nor any independent witness was produced against him by the police.

The counsel insisted that Yousaf had not directed his guards to torture the bakery’s employee but that they did it of their own accord. The attorney requested the court to release his client on bail as the matter is still open to further inquiry.

The magistrate adjourned the hearing on the bail petition till Friday and directed the police to file its reply. Yousaf was later shifted to Camp Jail. The seven elite police officials and Yousaf’s security guard were released on bail.
