KARACHI:

Classes were suspended at the Pakistan Shipowners Government College on Thursday after men barged in and started aerial firing.

According to principal Prof. Rizwan Harry, the men also threw stones and damaged vehicles. Around 150 students were at the college, which is located at Shahra-e-Noorjahan in North Nazimabad, when the incident took place.

Harry told The Express Tribune that he was unable to identify the “intruders” but they were not their students. “Our students are not like this - they respect their teachers and listen to them,” he said. “The shooting was so intense that we thought there would be severe casualties. Thankfully no one was injured and the intruders ran away as soon as the police arrived.”

The principal has asked for deployment of police officials outside the college for security.

Shahra-e-Noorjahan SHO Raja Tariq said that police arrived 10 minutes after the attack started. He said that the police’s arrival stopped a possible clash between activists of Pakhtoon Students Federation and Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba. No arrests were made till the filing of this report.

The principal, however, said that this was not a lone incident and such attacks usually take place at the start of a new academic session, adding that this year the session started on October 10. “I have been witnessing such attacks for the past four years but we still do not have police outside.”
