SC directs Rehman Malik to present report on dual national parliamentarians

Court grants Malik immunity from court appearances, orders for investigation of dual national lawmakers.

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday granted immunity from court appearances to Interior Minister Rehman Malik and directed that investigations be carried out against parliament members whose names appeared in the dual nationality case, Express News reported.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was heading the three-member bench hearing the dual nationality case in the Supreme Court.

Rehman Malik said that the media stated he had asked for permission to go to Kuwait and went to Swat instead, adding that petitioner Mehmood Akhtar Naqvi who had ridiculed him in court should be behind bars.

He further said that he had not talked about anything related to dual nationality of parliamentarians, to which the chief justice asked if it was in accordance with a minister’s post to retract his statement.

The court then directed Malik to present a report on dual national parliamentarians.

Justice Jawwad S Khawaja remarked that names of Dr Asim Hussain, Qadir Magsi, Babar Ghauri, Ishratul Ibad, Abdul Rauf Siddiqui and Waseem Akhtar had appeared with regard to dual nationality and ordered for investigations to be conducted.
