Gender equality: Congressman urges education for girls

WASHINGTON: US Congressman Dennis Kucinich has said that the attack on Malala Yousufzai is heartbreaking.  In a statement issued from his office, the House Democrat member said Malala was targeted for promoting education for women. “Her story has touched people all over the world and has brought much needed attention to the issues she courageously stood up for”.  Citing a study by UNESCO, the statement said that only 26 per cent of Pakistani girls are literate. “In addition to conflict, high rates of poverty and the dependence of many families on child labor, serves as an obstacle to education.” Our correspondent
