CJ slams police for inaction in lynching case

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary has said that the Sialkot incident reflects that there is no rule of law in the country.

He made the statement while hearing the Sialkot lynching case in the Supreme Court today. The report of the inquiry commission on the incident was presented in the court.

The chief justice slammed the police for handing over the accused to a mob who killed them.

Sialkot DPO Bilal Siddique told the court that 23 out of 28 suspects have been arrested and 18 of them have been sent on a judicial remand.

He said that SHO Rana Ilyas who was involved in the case, escaped from police custody with the help of Sub Inspector Rasheed. Rasheed was then released on bail.

Six policemen sent on 7 day judicial remand

Six police officials including former Sialkot District Police Officer Waqar Chauhan have been sent on a seven day judicial remand in connection with the Sialkot lynching case.

Five other police officials including former DPO also appeared before the Gujranwala Anti-Terrorism Court today.

The policemen are accused of inaction during the lynching of two brothers Muneeb and Mughees.

However, the prime accused SHO Rana Ilyas has managed to evade arrest along with one other police officer.

Meanwhile, Justice retired Kazim Malik, who was appointed by the Supreme Court to conduct an inquiry into the incident, says the apex court will start hearing the case from September 1.

SA | 14 years ago | Reply And now not one but two months have passed.. reading these comments makes me feel that was some other time, some other age, some other life.. Its all forgotten now! How many of us are still having sleepless nights? How many of us are still clinging to the false hopes of justice? How many of us still remember their disfigured faces?? None I suppose?

Arbab | 14 years ago | Reply A month has been passed yet no punishment for the butchers,it is understood that legal course takes time,but in this case its is crystal clear that the happening was rageous,policemen involved in this unfortunate happening must be removed fom the jobs imidiatly(How can they serve the comunity with this attitude they showed,beside their credibility is questionable) while the other buthers must be hannged,all of them,there must be no mercy for them at all after what they have done, On international level it could be understood as mob act but im sure whoever watched the movie of these butchers while they were hitting the young boys with iron rods and other filthy things could not watch it properly because of its contents ifever somebody watched it could not sleep for many nights and could not help to avoid thinking what he/she has watched. I pray for these young boys to Allah Almighty May they rest in Peace for Ever AlMighty Give patience to their parents and relatives.

Sohail | 14 years ago | Reply Let's see what top police official will do to protect their staff i.e. SHO, DPO and other police men. It is a slogan i.e "SAFE OUR MEN". as per the media reports main culprits are police officials because they could have stopped murder of two brothers. Murderers and police officials involved to be treated in the same way. This time the whole country is watching that "how the law will treat with police officials found involved in this murder". Hope the present government change the history.

I some time wonder if all things and actions of CJ and government are a mere media stunt. No one follows up an issue after lapse of some time.... I am glad there are people like you who observe whats happening in society. if we all do same then things will change over some period of time.

Arif Lodhi | 14 years ago | Reply Chittars were banged in open by the police over a few persons in Bhoana area of the celebrated province of Punjab a few months ago and yet we do not hear about that case as yet. waiting to hear the results of this case is nothing but a sheer wastage of emotions and time in this country where people are made to seal their lips againest the ruling conglomerate or the nexus whatever one may call it.

sameer ali khan | 14 years ago | Reply i've seen the video of the people arrested and the wanted people but unfortunately there is not that lady and that 15-16 years old boy who were also beating up cruelly there name is neither in the arrested list nor in the wanted list

Loyal | 14 years ago | Reply @Aamir:No Brother Aamir, I disagree with you there, the punishment these people deserve should be far greater, so therefore all the accused should have both hands and legs chopped off and be allowed to live on the streets of Sialkot, where this incident took place. By doing so it will give them a lot of time to repent, and it will teach the cowardly to fight against humanity.

Khurram Ahmed | 14 years ago | Reply We respect CJ's decisions but only slams on them not a conclusion. All concerned should be presented before the apex court because lower courts have not fulfill the judgement. These all should be terminated from services with life time prision so that in future this type of negligence should not be done.
