The timing of this award is particularly strange. The last few years have not been kind to the EU, with the worldwide economic depression hitting member countries such as Spain and Greece very hard. Austerity measures imposed on them as a price of receiving bailouts from countries such as Germany has sown mistrust and there is even the possibility of the EU struggling to survive as a single economic entity. Awarding the prize to the EU seems to be meant as an inducement for the member countries to stick together, just as awarding it to President Obama was to bind him to follow a path of peace. If the Nobel Peace Prize Committee does indeed believe that to be the case, then it is surely overrating the power of its award.
The official rationale for the prize is that the coming together of the Western European countries prevented the outbreak of another continental war. What the judges seemed not to understand is that it wasn’t the EU which stopped war; rather, it was the cessation of hostilities that allowed the EU to become a reality. In any case, if not going to war is enough to land a Peace Prize, just about every country in the world would be a prime candidate. That is the chief problem with the selection of the EU. There are millions of individuals, like our very own Abdul Sattar Edhi, who were more deserving winners. Instead, the Nobel Peace Prize Committee decided to play politics with an award that has now lost its lustre.

The committee should have cared for the brand name of "Nobel" awards!!! Excellent analysis... And why Obama was awarded will perhaps always remain one of the greatest mysteries in history!!!!
next years choices 1. Zimbabwe 2. Pirates from Somalia 3. Narendra Modi
Dont agree. EU has been supporting so many refugees from Islamic nations. These people are not even accepted by well off Muslim countries(and also filthy rich) in middle east. This shows the care towards humanity which is shown by EU nations. T
What did Edhi do? Did he help any minorirites? Did he prevent any Hindu girl being forcibly converted? Sorry, no mixing of religion in charity please.
@sid: I think this editorial reflects what many people (including Europeans) are thinking around the world. Most of the 27 EU members have joined because of the benefits of being part of a large common market and not because of any interest in world peace. If at all an award were to given, it should have been to the 6-nation leadership of the European Coal and Steel Community in 1950 who took this courageous decision - and primarily Robert Schuman who fought significant internal opposition in France to reach out to Germany so soon after the war; everyone else just climbed onto a moving train, and none of them fought wars with eachother anyway. This Peace Nobel to the current EU is merely a pat on the back for an economic bloc going through a tough time, and is not the purpose for which such an award.
It is their prize. They can give it to anyone they like, even to themselves. Who are we to criticize? Besides, it is all about politics; about making a political statement. Good for them. Who cares?!
Wrong analysis!!!!!!!!!!! France, germany and UK fought wars for 400 yrs but now war between them is unthinkable...............tell we one region of world where there is more human rights, democracy etc Recession comes and will go this is simple trade cycle...........I see sour grapes in this editorial............
Since the announcement two years ago that Obama got the prize, the organization is nothing more than a cave of jokers. If won, I would deposit the check and trash the trophy.
Very well said. This award is baffling when there are so many other more deserving possible recipients. It only weakens the value of the award to deserving recipients like Liu Xiaobo or Muhammad Yunus when they are sandwiched between ridiculous choices like the European Union, Kofi Annan, or Barack Obama.
