KUALA LUMPUR:
A former senior Malaysian sports official has been punished with a six-year ban after being found guilty for alleged involvement in two separate doping scandals, a report said yesterday. The Malaysian Athletic Federation (MAF) suspended Karim Ibrahim, who was the body’s deputy president from 2008 to last month, with immediate effect. This is the first time a sports official in Malaysia has been suspended. “The findings had enough proof of his involvement in both cases,” newly-elected MAF President Zainal Abidin Ahmad was cited as saying by The Star. “The suspension is based on the MAF’s constitution. He also cannot appeal against the suspension as the council’s decision is final. The case is officially closed.” Meanwhile a defiant Karim told AFP that he was a victim of false allegations.
