KARACHI: Pakistan’s off-spinner Saeed Ajmal was named in the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012 men’s team of the tournament alongside the tournament’s highest wicket-taker Ajantha Mendis.

Ajmal, who took nine wickets from six matches in the tournament, was the only Pakistani shortlisted for the team including five players from Sri Lanka and the West Indies. Mahela Jayawardena was named as captain after scoring 243 runs in the tournament, second behind Australia’s Shane Watson.

Watson, who was the man of the tournament with an extraordinary all-round performance of 249 runs and 11 wickets, also made it to the list. Swashbuckling Chris Gayle (222 runs and three wickets) and Marlon Samuels were named in the side as well, but mystery spinner Sunil Narine missed out.

New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum, who scored the only century of the tournament, was the chosen wicket-keeper while India’s Virat Kohli and England’s Luke Wright completed the batsmen’s list. Pacers Lasith Malinga from Sri Lanka and Mitchell Starc from Australia were chosen as the other two bowlers.

Meanwhile, no Pakistan player was part of the women’s team which included nine players from England and Australia, the finalists on Sunday.
