Pride and prejudice in Supreme Court

The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday told the Sindh Advocate General that it is a state responsibility not to fan linguistic prejudice.

The SC gave these remarks during the hearing of petitions against the 18th Amendment after Sindh Advocate General Yousaf Leghari presented his arguments before the larger bench.

Leghari had said that Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto had not been hanged had there been Sindhi judges in the Supreme Court.

The court rejected the argument, saying the judges must be appointed on the basis of merit irrespective of their language or place.

Aftab Kenneth Wilson | 14 years ago | Reply Please do not talk on merit. The case of CJ of Punjab Mr. Khawaja Sharif and Mr.; Ramday is enough. If the CJ of SC wants people of his own choice with a stick in his hands then why is it crossing the already drawn line between the two pillars. I simply consider it as confrontation not by the government but by some powerful judges who perhaps might be having some health problem or some even say Zardari Phobia. I am now above sixty but never seen such type of confrontation with all sorts of senseless or double meanings remarks coming out of this most important house of Lordships. A well known politician Mrs. Abida has already openly said in a talk show that Punjabi Judges are responsible for the hanging of our ever first constitutionally elected Prime Minister of Pakistan. Then at the time of takeover by Musharaf only Judges of other Provinces very willingly took oath as PCO judges and the Judges from Sindh refused to do so. The main question here is that why the constitution is used Blindly in the favor of dictators and with open eyes against the democracy/democratic set up. One now feels as if someone somewhere wants that the present government must not be allowed to move freely but on their knees until the road is paved for some other forces. What an unfortunate way of ruining the whole system. May God Save our country from all oppressors.
