Joru ka bhai ek taraf
In the Bollywood saying, with all of creation on one side, the wife’s brother alone on the other side is of equal value. Robert Vadra has weighed the options and, unfortunately for the Nehru-Gandhi family, picked saari Khudai over joru ka bhai.
The one asset that Sonia Gandhi built for her dynasty was an image of reticence and service. She refused to become prime minister, daughter Priyanka rejected the idea of contesting elections, and son Rahul remains reluctant to take on executive power in government. He would rather be someone who works with the grass roots. This image might have been built on selfish needs rather than selfless ones. For instance, we had a hysterical Sushma Swaraj threatening to tonsure her head (a disturbing thought) if Sonia took office, and it is true that Priyanka still has the chance to come in, and it is true that Rahul Gandhi wields extraordinary power even without being a minister. But it is also true that the image of the family has held.
At least till now.
The damage that Vadra has wrought on Rahul Gandhi’s image as a well-meaning man, with none of the regular interests of Indian politicians (lining their pockets) will not be undone easily. Nehru-Gandhi ka naam poora mitti main milai diya, as one Gabbar said.
It doesn’t matter what Vadra says in his defence. He cannot normalise the transactions he has had with real estate giant DLF in the eyes of the media. I’ve been a businessman and can tell you that it is unheard of that a company will offer 65 crore rupee advances to a ‘partner’ doing business on the company’s capital. There is absolutely no question that it is not an ‘industry practice’ to hand over unsecured money of such sums.
The real question is what this money was advanced for, and though I am naïve I can see it’s not because it made great business sense.
I suspect that ministers who line up to defend the Gandhis before even the facts have come out are unlikely to reject a ‘request’ made by the family’s members or their business partners.
This is the truth in India, where relationships have always meant much more than propriety.
Vadra says the allegations by Arvind Kejriwal are defamatory. I’ll wait for the case to be filed but I suspect it won’t be. If it is, it won’t be pursued.
The other thing is the language that Vadra has used in his defence. He says that Kejriwal’s action is an attempt to “manufacture lies against me and malign me and my family in order to gain cheap publicity and for the launch of their political party”.
This is not the language of a person who is wronged. It is the language of someone who is defensive. And it is political language. If Vadra doesn’t know this, and said this in error, he is not the brilliant person that DLF clearly seems to think he is.
To maintain their image as clean politicians, and they still have it, the Gandhi family must without delay set up an investigation into Vadra’s business deals. It must be independent of the government, and even if it doesn’t satisfy the opposition (it won’t), it must satisfy the media which is also asking the same questions now that Kejriwal is.
If it fails to do this, the Gandhi family can kiss its aura goodbye.
This means that the gentle treatment they receive from the media, and reverence, will be a thing of the past.
Ghar jamaais in India usually mean trouble, and Vadra has just delivered a massive load of it on his in-laws’ doorstep. Priyanka Gandhi apparently fell in love with Vadra because as children he treated her as any other girl. A normal person and not one from such hallowed lineage.
Somehow, I don’t think that’s how his partners in DLF see her.

A big thanks for a factual and robust rebuttal to @Ravinder Kaushik Tiger,@Gratgy and sundry others who are never tired of playing the broken record about Sonia's elligibilty to hold a ministerial birth in an Indian cabinet.
@gp65 Liked your note of appreciation to @Rakib. You are a true gentleman.
@Rakib: Thank you . You provided some helpful information. Appreciate it.
@gp65: addendum:-Indian Constitution makes it quite easy. It makes minimum demands on a candidate for premiership. Once it is established that Sonia Gandhi is Citizen of India, she can vote, if she can vote she can be elected and if she can be elected she can hold office of PM provided she is invited by Prez & commands majority support in Lok Sabha. Following is an excellent & very educative write-up on the subject of "Reciprocity". It might help some to acquire additional knowledge.
http://thinkers-pad.blogspot.in/2012/01/indian-citizenship-act-sonia-gandhi-dr.html
@gp65: Citizenship is fundamental to all issues, whether to be a voter, an MP, a Minister or a PM or President. Also, I provided more than one reference. You ignored the first part of my response where I provided details of how the then President, by his own admission in his memoirs, was perfectly willing to invite Sonia to form the Govt. Why would he do that if he was not satisfied with her suitability? He would have been briefed adequately about "Reciprocity" (if such an applicability as qualification to become PM exists at all). Assuming it is such an obvious objection, surly APJ Kalam would have been provided with professional assistance, in matters of Constitution, of far better quality than what has been seen here so far.
@Rakib: "Earlier, Supreme Court had already dismissed the case against Sonia Gandhi challenging her citizenship."
Gratgy's argument was not based on Sonia not being an Indian citizen. So the reference you provided is not relevant. His argument was that per Indian constitution, naturalized citizens have a right to the top post based on principle of reciprocity. So if an Indian born person who becomes an Italian citizen was eligible for Italian premiership, Sonia would have been eligible. Since this is ot the case, she is not eligible.
Thanks.
@Passive voices, best comment!
@Gratgy:
She could become the Prime Minister only if Italy allowed an Indian to become the Prime Minister of Italy.
This urban myth, like the yarn by Swamy & Friends, was dependent on those Indians who became flies on the walls of Rashtrapati Bhavan to claim to have overheard the conversation between APJ Abdul Kalam the then President & Sonia Gandhi. Prez Kalam-a Muslim duly approved by BJP- wrote in his recent memoirs "Turning Points: A Journey Through Challenges" implicitly trashing the myth and making it clear that he was ready to swear-in Sonia but she sprung a surprise by nominating MM Singh. Kalam's words should put an end to this silly tale. (IMO, may be she did not want to die the way her mother-in-law & husband did nor would she ever want her son Rahul to become a PM to meet the same fate.)

@Gratgy: Agree with you. Shetried to be PM but our law does not allow it. Subrmanium Swamy explained this clause to the then President Abdul Kalam. So much for "Sonia ka tayag". On lighter note If the youth of India want to become rich in no time they should start compiling list of Ministrs/MPs who have daughters of marriagble age.
It is actually a dangerous trend. Indian politics is slowly turning like pakistani politics. Ministers are sticking to chair despite serious corruption charges, and now this son-in-law business.
@Ravinder Kaushik Tiger: I don't believe the filth that comes out of Swamy's mouth. Fifth class pass or not, she conducts herself with more dignity and class than Harvard educated Swamy and his troop of chamchas put together. The then Prez, APJ Kalam has already said in a recent interview that he would have supported Sonia Gandhi's claim to be PM had she come to him then, so Swamy's claims basically go down the drain. It was rather classy of her then to renounce the utltimate seat of power and chose a background role which showed the entire country that she was not power hungry. Swamy on the other hand is a mass of contradictions. He advocates for a hindu rashtra and writes about demolishing mosques to curb "Islamic Terror"( for which he was thrown out of Harvard) while he himself is married to a Parsi and his famous news anchor daughter is married to a muslim. I wouldn't go personal on anyone but Swamy is an exception.
This is an indirect hit at Bhutto's son-in-law in Pakistan.
People are very jealous. They cant see anybody prosper. The poor man had taken only 300 crore which is a pittance when compared to 186000 crore, 176000 crore, and lakhs of crores being siphoned away by the congressies and others through MNREGA, PDS, Sarv Shikhsa Abhiyan, NRHM etc. I plead with all the Indians to foregive the man as he might have been misled by his status and give him a chance to reform subject to surrender of the amount and a small fine which her MIL can afford.
@Author,
Sonia Maino Gandhi's aura of reticence and service that you talk about exists only in your imagination.
@Ravinder Kaushik Tiger:
Is this the same Swamy who said Anna Hazare's Team is a Naxalite (Maoists) one? Article # 84 of Constitution of India is silent on educational qualifications of PM. He or She has to be an Indian citizen of 25 years if from Lok Sabha & 30 if member of Rajya Sabha. Regarding her status as Italian citizen two of the most competent persons of the then NDA Govt with authentic information at their command were the Home Minister Advani & External Affairs Minister Jashwant Singh. Have they said or proven anything contrary to whatever was declared by Sonia to Election Commission on the subject? If not, it behooves others too to stay silent instead of advertising ignorance.
All the comments from Indians: Long back I have heard all these against Indira Gandhi. Right from the word 'kitchen cabinet'. Its a standard procedure in a democracy. As a journalist Aakar Patel should have been aware of this. Why did he get carried away?
Vadra is using his in-law's status to shamelessly beg for money. A recent India today detailed how his 'small' business grew exponentially to an Multi Million Dollar Empire after his marriage to Priyanka.
On which planet you live Akar...Mars or Jupiter.....the bofors has long back stripped Gandhis of their so-called aura.....Why Sonia Gandhi could not become PM is a well-known fact...she did no sacrifice, she was simply not eligible.... and Rahul Gandhi as grass root worker...my goodness....he is just incompetent to do anything....else, he would be sitting in the PMO by now..... you need to decide whether you are a Genuine Journalist or pro-Gandhi family column writer...
"She refused to become prime minister" Subramanian Swamy has blown this myth long ago. Don't pretend that you are unaware of this. Sonia Gandhi was not legally qualified to become PM of India as she had not renounced her Italian citizenship. Also she lied about her educational qualification. (She is just fifth pass)
For once, I agree with mr. Patel. I am an agnostic voter, who,would vote for either congress or BJP depending on issues at hand. I voted for,congress post Nuclear deal, but, will never in future vote for congress as long as anyone from Gandhi family is at helm.
In past Mr Patel has justified dynasties, I suppose even now he has some hope they will do some course correction. But, it's evident to me that they are beyond redemption.
I for one bit cannot agree that Gandhi's have built an aura of 'service to people' around them. If at all anything, people think that they are lesser evil than 'communal forces'... The way these guys have plundered from the country makes me nauseous and I have no doubts that other citizens feel any different...Please have some conscience and write something which is closer to reality..
