Despite crashing out of the World Twenty20, Pakistan Women had a huge reason to smile at the end of their campaign courtesy a one-run win over arch-rivals India.
The win, a day after their male counterparts got thrashed against the same rivals, was also Pakistan’s first in the World Twenty20s having played eight matches prior to this. Pakistan had lost to England and Australia in the two matches earlier but successfully defending 98 against India ensured the group campaign ended on a high.
Pakistan captain Sana Mir, who played an all-round part in the win, said that the country’s poor history against India in World Cups helped her side hold on for a win.
“This was one of our goals before we set off for the event,” Sana told The Express Tribune. “We hated India’s 100 per cent record against us in World Cups and we were desperate to end it here. We worked very hard because playing against India adds an extra motivation.”
The captain also termed the win a ‘step forward’ towards where the team wants to be.
“Although we are out of the title race, we have proved our mettle. India are one of the top teams and have been semi-finalists in all World Twenty20s.”
Sana added the team need improvement in the batting department which will aid the side’s progress.
“Our bowling and fielding has improved. It’s the batting that is a worrying point for us.”
Manager content with show
Meanwhile, Pakistan manager Ayesha Ashar expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance in the event.
“We were fine overall,” said Ayesha. “The team was unfortunate to lose on D/L against Australia as we did not get the opportunity to fight. But we restricted top teams to low totals which is the biggest positive. The players will learn from mistakes and improve further.”
The manager added the team was focusing on the play-off against South Africa where a win will ensure their qualification for the next World T20.
England overpower Australia
In the other match of the day, England chased down the 146-run target to beat Australia by seven wickets and end the group stage unbeaten.
Sarah Taylor remained unbeaten on 65, the tournament’s highest score so far, and took her side past Australia’s total with 11 balls to spare. Taylor shared a 63-run stand with Danni Wyatt who finished with 33 off just 17 balls.
Earlier, Australia opener Meg Lanning helped her side to a good start with a 39 from 31 balls after her team opted to bat first. However, Taylor and Wyatt’s brutal assault at the end meant Australia had to finish the group second best.

Indians have problem in understanding simple English:
Skipper said we hate INDIA'S RECORD!! And all Indian trolls are getting hyper. While they forget that Indians hate Pakistan more than the other way round. Evidence: See the comments made by indians here!!
Poor Indians. Their men's team already has a poor enough record against Pakistan head-to-head. Now with a little victory in the T20 men's WC, the hype starts again. Too bad they gate crashed out of the tournament a bit early :p
Aww, you poor little kids. Your entire world revolves around India doesn't it?
The captain should have sport's spirit rather than hate against any team.Leave that culture; Improve your team performance and aim at the Trophy; You will be appreciated on your success.
Alot of Indians bragging about their world cup record..........they seem to forget the overall head to head stands at 85-59 in favour of Pakistan. Pakistan has the 3rd best all time win/loss ratio in test matches(India is 7th) and is 4th all time in ODI's. Even in t2o's we have the secound best win/loss ratio, again India a poultry sixth. And still you bleed blue?.
@ upkar gill,
If you hate the thinking of Pakistanis, then it is not unique because Pakistanis also hate India's thinking, both sides hate each other. You are right that your country has more Muslims but this because your country is also bigger than Pakistan which cannot be neglected and this is where percentage counts.
@umair ali: we dont hate pakistanis we hate your thinking, our country has more muslims than you but they think secular unlike you guys.
"We hated India’s record, says Sana" --
Vow, what a thing to say about your rivals who have been licking you in cricket for years but never bragged about "hating" Pakistani cricketers. I guess Sana Mir, the women cricket team's captain, has "graduated" from some Pakistani madrassah. She never probably learnt the concept of sportsmanship which the game of cricket is supposed to imbibe. Losing a game (it's not a war, which would be even more tragic for Pakistan because it hardly has any resources left for anything constructive for its people) is, in fact, the best thing that can happen to a team. Defeat teaches a team to be resilient. It arouses their determination to win and enhances their appetite to play better. Perhaps, a refresher course in English would do well for Sana Mir and also serve in the interests of Pakistan which hates the entire world and which is also, in return, being hated by the world. I am using Lady Sania's "hate" vocabulary ! And, Pakistanis, if you hate India and its record, don't come to India. You are not welcome here either.
This is a joke seriously. One can understand when stupid members of the awam consider an Indian win bigger than the event, but coming from the national team captain is utterly disgraceful. Yes I know it's a women team, that is trying to make a name on the international scene, but they should be disappointed that they didn't actually go deep in the tourney and come back winning this one match. Their males counterparts apart from the Indian loss have actually done quite well and to be honest they have done reasonably enough to make it to the semis. So lets get out this mentality of competing with India only for last and second last positions and support our team keeping the bigger picture in mind.
We should not be hung up on India's win over Pakistan at world cups. It is a good achievement for them b/c they have inferior record against pakistan in every form of cricket in all eras for last 35 years. But pakistani should not worry about it too much, losing one odd game in a tournament that happens once every four years is more of an anomaly then rule!!
Well done Pakistan, at least some win is better than all loss.
@Khan:
She explicitly stated that, "We hated India’s 100 per cent record against us in World Cups"
@Pinto: Perhaps you should revisit the article again .. She didn't use that word for the Indian team .. obviously as a player and captain any one would hate their bad record ... What would you feel if you were in her place ? perhaps love your failures? I guess not. Although, one must agree people from both side in this region are so obsessed with each other's failures that they forget to take a sporting match as a form of entertainment and instead make it a win lose war and start taunting each others .. how ignorant of all of us.
Never mind we still have more wins against India in Men Cricket...While in Women Cricket we just clinched the victory over their Women..! So Pakistan all the wayyy..!!
@umair ali: You are absolutely right!
@ Chulbul Pandey,
You dont have to show your wisdom by giving such comment because the fact is that India also hates Pakistan equally just as Pakistan hates India.
Not too long ago, the coach of Hockey team uttered something similar - he was happy that his team did slightly better than Indian team even though their overall performance can only be described as pathetic. And now, Pakistani Eves show the same poor sportsmanship - they are out of contest but they still have reasons to smile as they won against India.
Your national sport is not Hockey. Your favorite sport is not Cricket either. Your national sport is - bash India. Your favorite past time is being negative and hateful towards India. But its ok for you to listen to our music and watch our Bollywood movies :-) This national psyche pervades every aspect of your lives, Ms. Sana Mir. We get it - Good sportsmanship is not your strong point.
That reminds me - Hypocrisy is one sport you guys should compete in. You will invariably excel in that sport.
Sincerely!
Instead of aiming to win the T20 World cup, the team got distracted by its 'hate' for its so-called arch-rival. Result being Pakistan is out of contention. Pakistan's 'hate India' obsession ends up only damaging Pakistan.
In Pakistan everybody only hates, to the point of self-destruction. Instead of aiming to win the T20 World cup, the team got distracted by its 'hate' for its so-called arch-rival. Result being Pakistan is out of contention. Pakistan's 'hate India' obsession ends up only damaging Pakistan.
@ Bring It On,
You take pride in seeing Pakistan record of ZERO PERCENTAGE against India in the history of men’s Cricket World Cup 50 Overs and T20 formats. In the same way we are happy to see PAKISTAN'S MORE WINS AGAINST INDIA head to head.
How does that sound ??
We Indians take immense pride in seeing Pakistan record of ZERO PERCENTAGE against India in the history of men's Cricket World Cup 50 Overs and T20 formats. Cricket World Cup head to head results for men: India 100%, Pakistan 0%.
@Buttler who writes "Madam…If you are reading this i wanna say….Tussi chaa gayay hooo…Mens team should learn some lesson….Great work…Keep it up…Give us world cup as well…"
What world cup? Gilli Danda world cup? They are already out of the contest.
Completely agree with VP! No need to politicize this, Sana Mir! What a shame to hear this from the captain of the team. Disgraceful.
@ Pinto,
Dont forget that it was a game and both sides have their turns of winning and loosing.
When you talk about how our male clowns got thrashed by your Indian team, dont forget to check the history record that Pakistan has more wins against India.
@pinto Victory is victory even if it is by 100 runs or 1 run..we lost men wala match,we said congrats to you guys..now time for you to say that..what's th biggie? I don't get the point of comments of majority of Indians here full of catty remarks and hatered. And then you ppl xcuse us of being 'intolerant' - JOKE! May peace be upon both teams across the border!
@VP : dont be a cry baby now!
When "hate" word comes in a sport between two individual or nation then it never remains a sports. The jingoistic world uttered by Pakistani captain shows her level of sportsmanship. We the Indians and Pakistanis feels hero when we beat one another but meekly surrenders as soon as we see a white (wo)men. Our servility and jingoistic thinking at galore.
Well done Pakistani women we are proud of you. You have done better than Pakistani men cricket team.
Madam...If you are reading this i wanna say....Tussi chaa gayay hooo...Mens team should learn some lesson....Great work...Keep it up...Give us world cup as well...
All roads lead to Delhi...
