Blaming successive governments for the ongoing separatist insurgency in Balochistan, Nawaz Sharif, the chief of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), said on Sunday that the Baloch people have been forced to “rebel” against the state.
“An East Pakistan-like situation has been created. And the Baloch people have been driven to take up arms,” Nawaz told a gathering in Dera Murad Jamali tehsil of Naseerabad district on the second leg of his tour to the flood-affected areas of the country.
The current bout of Baloch insurgency, which started in 2004, became deadlier following the killing of Jamhoori Wattan Party chief Nawab Akbar Bugti in a military operation in 2006. The operation was ordered by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, who had toppled the Nawaz Sharif government in a coup in October 1999.
However, Nawaz said the incumbent PPP-led coalition government was equally responsible for the situation in Balochistan. “Our Baloch brothers have been further alienated by the incompetent government,” he added. Nawaz called upon all political parties to come forward and play their role in restoring calm in the restive province.
The PML-N chief also endorsed the six-point charter of Sardar Akhtar Mengal, the chief of Balochistan National Party, saying the issue was “critical” and warranted immediate and serious attention by the federal and provincial governments.
According to him, the only solution to the Balochistan crisis lay in holding transparent elections which, he said, were not possible without a neutral caretaker government. He, however, warned that his party would boycott the election if they were not conducted by an impartial interim set-up.
Nawaz also visited Dera Allah Yar, Jafarabad and other areas in Balochistan where he was received by Sardar Sanaullah Zehri. Earlier he visited Adam Khan Panhwar village of Jacobabad with nearly a dozen truckloads of relief goods for the flood-affected people.
Nawaz told the flood victims that he sympathised with them and appealed to the government to pay immediate attention to their plight.
“Many areas of Sindh and Balochistan have been badly hit by the recent torrential rains. People need immediate attention otherwise their condition will deteriorate further,” Nawaz said, adding that the government should pay Rs100,000 to each affected family.
“But we will not leave the affected people at the mercy of an indifferent government,” said Nawaz, adding that the Punjab government had always stood by the abandoned, while the PPP had failed to deliver despite tall claims.
Nawaz said his party would fulfill its commitment to easing the suffering of flood victims, adding that relief goods had been sent to Dera Murad Jamali, but were having difficulties getting past flood water accumulated near Dera Ghazi Khan.
The PML-N chief also distributed cheques for Rs200,000 to each family that had lost a member to the flood torrents. While efforts to provide relief to the flood victims won the favour of people from both the provinces, Nawaz also spoke on Sindh-centric issues, such as the local government system in the province.
Nawaz took a swipe at the local government system, saying separate systems for Karachi and the rest of the province were fuelling resentment among the people of the province.
He went on to pledge unconditional support for nationalists opposing the ordinance, saying the government was only trying to pacify its coalition partner (MQM).

Baloch love Pakitsan ...
Nawaz Sharif is the only true leader of Pakistan. He made Akbar Bugti CM and he is the one who can bring Baloch brothers back to the reconciliation table.
Most unfortunately. Balochs have never been a part of our culture-their life styles have always been resemblent to that of Afghans as Mongerers and War Lords! They are ready to accept democracy which allots them positions of power and without that they dont accept anything! Ironically, people who have served at CM slot of the province are suggesting today "There's no need for bloodshed-lets part ways happily-We are not as sincere to Pakistan as Bengalis were etc." The reason for their problems is they themselves, they have kept their people in dark, in the past centuries without exposure to education and today they ahve the audicity to blame rest of Pakistan for the miseries they themselves created! Warlords like Bugti allegedly being funded by India via Afghanistan and making their own people their slaves got the medicine they prepared for others! Put an end to this clanish/Sardari system and then see how people get their rights etc.
"NEUTRAL" for Mian Saheb means, something of his personal choice. We have experienced this in appointment of Chief Election Commissioner.
This guy has really matured over time. At least he makes all the right sound bites.
He might be better for Pakistan, compared to closet Taliban or utterly corrupt or religious right parties.
Mr. Sharif! What was your response to the Baluchistan saga when you were PM?
Pakistan has always been a victim of complainers and whiners and it is time; long overdue, that all locusts (politicians) are sprayed with insecticide, collected into a heap, shipped FOP (destination) to the Australian outback or to South Africa and fed to the dingoes and hyaenas.
Until the Baluch villagers are not given their due rights or the tribal lands are not sequestrated by the government and distributed to the haris, the trouble with these sardars will continue to rise exponentially. The British left behind a topographic ditch that seems to be intractable.
Salams to Pakistan
Actually Mr Nawaz you have also contributed in the suffering of the people. How many people from your family are in politics Shahbaz sharif, captain zafdar and his wife, Hamza shahbaz etc etc. Nearly 22 memebers of your family are in politics. Your family is running pakistan. I would request the ECP- to make a rule that only one member of a family should be allowed to sit in National or provisional assembles. There are many districts in pakistan where people from those indengenious areas are not elected but your family is representing them.Same is the case in Baluchistan.
Democracy is not ruling of families its the rule of people. One man from one family to sit in assemblies ---Election commission to make this law to enforce real democracy. Otherwise Democracy is a "Big Fraud" where people are not benefeciaries.
Nawaz is just doing lip service and has taken not a single bold step towards a credible opposition. He is content during last 4.5 years running show in Punjab. This is why PMLN is limited to the Punjab rural areas where people have less exposure to media and information.
Mr. Nawaz Shareef, I salute to your wisdom of supporting the cause of Nationalists every where in Pakistan. Sons of soil have never lost a political battle and you know more than any other politician in Pakistan that "JAAG PUNJABI JAAG" helped you win majority votes. My heart bleeds for Baloch nationalists who have been pushed against the wall by the ultimate power in Pakistan. However, no matter how much you oppose the new ordinance of local bodies in Sindh, the voters in Sindh will never vote for you, but trying to please them you have shown your disliking for those people in Sindh who are not considered as the son of soil.
Nawaz doesn't have enough guts to actually boycott the elections. What a joke, he wouldn't boycott the polls even if Musharraf was interim Prime Minister.
