LAHORE:

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Punjab has demanded that the provincial government announce a schedule of party-based local elections within 24 hours.

PPP leaders made the demand at a convention titled ‘Local Bodies Elections in Punjab’ and held here at the Alhamra on Saturday. Attendance at the convention was disappointing, with few prominent former councilors or district nazims participating.

PPP Punjab President Imtiaz Safdar Warraich said that as the Supreme Court had ordered that local body elections be held, the PPP must push the Pakistan Muslim League-nawaz organise polls in the Punjab.

He alleged that development funds allocated for the local body system were being used to develop Lahore city alone. He said that the PML-N feared that it would lose all over the Punjab if it held local elections.

PPP Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Raja Riaz said that Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was a dictator who knew only how to dictate. He said that Sharif had turned the Punjab Assembly into a puppet and he dealt with the cabinet like they were a team of his personal employees. He said that the PPP would press the Punjab government to hold local elections before the upcoming general elections.
